Singer-songwriter Jai-Jagdeesh’s new album 'From Dust' is a remarkable exploration of deeply personal and universal themes of music born from trauma and grief. Traversing realms of pain and recovery and all the spaces in between, Jai-Jagdeesh explores the layers of humanity on her most daring and introspective project to date. She confronts authority and the injustices, both personal and universal, in “Take the Pedestals Down” and “Nobody Told Me”. As she leads us into the present moment, the musical layers swirl like an auditory take on Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” or Munch’s “The Scream,” both haunting and intricately beautiful. Guitars awash in reverb twist with the tails of violins to create a bed for her honest and intimate vocals.
‘From Dust’ is a falling apart and a search for rebuilding; a bittersweet journey; and Jai-Jagdeesh expresses it with the most exquisite and intentional touch. ‘From Dust’ includes thirteen tracks, taking us on a vulnerable musical journey with the release of the full album. “Road to Somewhere” was the first single to be released as part of this project. It is an anthem reconciling a painful past, the mystery of the future, and the knowing of the present moment. Jai-Jagdeesh confronts the sadness of a hard childhood experience, and she does so with the courage of an adult brave enough to venture onto paths unknown.
“Here Comes the Rain” is the sound of the calm within the storm of pain and mourning. Jai-Jagdeesh journeys from grief and rage to serenity in “Here Comes the Rain.” Inspired by a devastating event in her life, her words are like a stream of tranquility amidst the natural forces spoken through guitar and violin as Jai-Jagdeesh’s mournful, soul-stirring voice creates a compass when all feels lost.
“Clear” arrived as a minimalist anthem of empowerment, Jai-Jagdeesh’s folk ballad ‘Clear’ was written to inspire in the midst of crisis and personal chaos. With an understated arrangement of guitars, vocals and violins, the innocence and strength of the lyrics is a subtle rallying cry to listeners that they will be alright.
The three Gurmukhi tracks on this album, “Mera Man Lochai”, “Akal” and “Suniai”, were previewed on an EP entitled ‘The End is the Beginning.’ These three songs are contemporary interpretations of ancient sounds. Born of an emotional shipwreck, they were, and remain, a coping mechanism; deepest pain transformed into gentle beauty. They serve alternately as medicine music, to calm, or as sonic fuel, to energize, depending on the need of the moment.
Today, ‘From Dust’ arrives inviting us to take part in this musical journey of wild feelings featuring the first song of the album “Dancing Under Water”. This track is a siren song, an invitation to madness. It is also the answer to that invitation, a wholehearted surrendering of control. This track, with its cinematic textures and haunting tone, was made to light the listener’s spirit on fire.
