Aliya’s Return: A Debut Album That Finds Its Way Home

An album that arrives as a companion for these times, an invitation to remember who we are. 

With her debut album Return, British-Iranian singer-songwriter Aliya offers a deeply personal body of work shaped by nature, transformation, and the quiet courage of becoming. Releasing on July 17, Return  traces the cycles of loss and belonging, vulnerability and resilience, inviting listeners into a space where music becomes both refuge and reflection.

This album is the culmination of years of writing, listening, and trusting the unfolding of an artistic vision that found its perfect collaborator in producer, artist, and longtime friend Ajeet.

"I was a fan of Ajeet's work for a long time," Aliya shares. "I had this feeling of wanting to work with her for a few years before we were connected in person. Ajeet is so woven into the project. I feel I share this album with Ajeet, and with nature—it's been a collaboration."

That collaboration became something far deeper than production.

"I remember saying to her that I felt she would hear things I didn't yet hear, and that she would bring the songs to life. That's exactly how it happened."

The result is an album that feels intimate and expansive at once, where every arrangement serves the emotional truth at the heart of each song.

Nature as Co-Writer

Throughout Return, nature is more than a backdrop—it is an active voice.

For Aliya, songwriting rarely begins in a studio. It begins beneath trees, beside rivers, and in moments of quiet attention.

"Nature is my favorite place to write, so naturally her voice comes through," she says. "I often feel she is my co-writer. Sometimes I feel I'm just listening and writing, but she is the one singing to me and singing words through me."

Rather than seeing herself as the sole creator, Aliya describes the process as translating something much older and wiser: "I feel I'm carrying her message through my own interpretation of her wisdom."

That relationship with the natural world gives Return its unmistakable atmosphere—one where landscapes breathe through melodies and silence becomes as meaningful as sound.

The Meaning of Return

Although the songs explore themes of rebirth, death, belonging, and vulnerability, Aliya says those threads only became fully visible once the album was complete.

"It came together afterwards," she explains. "That's how I chose to name the album Return. I'm inspired by the cycles of life, how they have been lived through me, and how I see them lived through others."

The title speaks less to arriving somewhere new than remembering something essential that has always existed beneath life's constant movement.

When asked what place we can always return to, despite lives filled with travel and uncertainty, her answer comes without hesitation.

"Definitely nature. A river, a tree, a whole forest or a patch of grass. Nature is our most simple and direct mirror, where we can regulate ourselves, where the mind can soften and stresses unravel. For me, nature has always been where I can recenter and remember who I am."

Songs That Walk Beside You

One of Aliya's greatest hopes is that listeners won't simply hear these songs—they'll build their own relationship with them.

"Some of the songs have more subtle messages," she says. "They're open to interpretation, and I like that. I like to see what understandings emerge from people without them being told what to feel or think."

Rather than offering fixed meanings, Return creates space for personal discovery.

"I hope listeners connect in their own ways, make their own meanings, and that the songs give them something they carry with them."

Perhaps her favorite image is imagining each song as a quiet companion.

"To imagine the songs being little friends, walking with people as they go about their lives, is one of the most exciting parts of recording music for me. When I listen to music, I never feel alone. Music helps me get through anything and everything."

Finding Safe Ground

Among the album's most intimate moments is "Safe Ground," a song Aliya describes as the most

vulnerable to release.

"It's written to and from the parts of me that have felt really lost in this world."

The song begins with a quiet question.

"At the start, I'm asking for permission to build my home on safe ground."

By the end, something has shifted.

"It ends with claiming that it's my time to build my home on safe ground. That's what the album Return is all about—being lost, being found, asking for permission to exist, and then claiming that permission to exist."

It is perhaps the clearest expression of the journey woven throughout the record: not becoming someone new, but finally allowing oneself to fully arrive.

A Full Human Journey

As her first full-length release, Return introduces listeners to Aliya not only as a singer, but as a storyteller deeply committed to honoring the complexity of being human.

"I hope listeners feel and hear a full human journey within the songs," she says. "I hope they can connect to the more subtle messages in ways that meet them where they are."

That openness—to emotion, to mystery, and to personal interpretation—is what gives the album its enduring quality.They are songs that reveal themselves over time.

"These songs have brought such healing for me, so I'm excited they are born and ready to be shared with others. I also feel deeply honored and grateful to have such an amazing team of women who have supported and mentored me throughout this whole time. I've gained experience, friendships, and knowledge through the connections I've made over the years, and it means the world to me."

With Return, Aliya offers listeners an invitation to slow down, to listen deeply, to trust the cycles of life, and to remember that no matter how far we wander, there is always a path back home—to ourselves, and to the living world that has been singing to us all along.
