Releasing Fear

About This Meditation:

Yogi Bhajan taught this meditation on July 30, 1996. During this class, he said that fear causes imbalances in our personality and creates behavioral problems. He taught this meditation to help us release fear and balance our emotions.


Sit on your heels with a straight spine. Stretch your arms out in front of you, parallel to the ground and shoulder width apart. Your palms are flat, facing the ground with your fingertips pointing straight forward.

Mantra Translation:

All honor to the One, Hail the Primal Being whose attributes cannot be described, Who is without beginning, the Unstruck Sound, and whose form is One through every Age.

Movement for this practice:

The arms alternate between straight forward, parallel to the ground and raised up to 60 degrees. Keep the arms, elbows and fingers straight. The chin is pulled slightly in throughout the meditation. The movement is done with a precise beat, using a projection of strength.

Aadays: Raise your arms up 60 degrees
Tisai: Bring your arms parallel to the ground straight in front of you.
Aadays: Raise your arms up 60 degrees
Aad: Arms straight in front
Aneel: Raise your arms up 60 degrees
Anaad: Arms straight in front
Anaahat: Raise your arms up 60 degrees
Jug-Jug: Arms straight in front
Ayko: Raise your arms up 60 degrees
Vays: Arms straight in front
Chant the mantra in a monotone. Each word is spoken individually with a slight pause, except for Jug-Jug, which is run together as one word. Chant from the navel point.

Eyes: Eyes are focused at the tip of the nose.

Time: 23.5 minutes

To End: Inhale deeply, stretch the spine and hold for 10 seconds. Exhale. Repeat one more time, and relax.

Yogi Bhajan taught that everyone has created between 16-20 personalities to help us deal with life. These various aspects of ourselves come out in different situations. This meditation helps to balance those aspects of ourselves and move through life in a fearless way.
