BELINDA CARLISLE

Bio

Belinda Carlisle is an American singer who gained worldwide fame as the lead vocalist of The Go-Go's, one of the most successful all-female bands of all time, and then as an iconic solo artist. Over the course of her career she has sold over 30 million albums.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Carlisle frequented the Hollywood punk scene of the late 1970's, briefly playing drums for legendary punk band The Germs. In 1978, sitting on a street corner with friend Jane Wiedlin, they decided to form The Go-Go's; within 3 years their album, "Beauty & The Beat", was the number 1 album in the country, one of the best-selling debut albums ever. Their biggest hits included "We Got The Beat", "Our Lips Are Sealed", "Vacation" and "Head Over Heels". The Go-Go's became one of the most successful American bands of the 1980s, helping usher new wave music into popular American radio, and becoming the first all-female band who wrote their own music and played their own instruments to ever achieve a No. 1 album.

The Go-Go’s broke up in 1984 and Carlisle embarked on a solo career with her first big hit, released in 1986, the romantic pop ballad "Mad About You". In the next few years she released a string of chart-topping staples such as her signature hit "Heaven is a Place on Earth" (a worldwide number one hit), "I Get Weak", "Circle In The Sand", "Leave A Light On", and "Summer Rain" to name a few. In the 1990's she released several albums- "Live Your Life Be Free", "Real" and "A Woman And A Man" which spawned several hits in Europe and internationally. In 2007, she released her seventh album as a solo artist, critically acclaimed “Voila”, an album of French language classics that was her first full-length solo studio album in more than ten years.

Her latest release “Wilder Shores” is a pop album with a twist, combining a pop sound with Kundalini Yoga mantras in Gurmukhi and some inspirational English songs. “Wilder Shores” also features an acoustic version of the global hit “Heaven is a Place on Earth”, which she has sung in classes taught by yoga-stars Gurmukh and Seane Corn.

Carlisle released her autobiography, "Lips Unsealed", which was a New York Times Bestseller and received favorable reviews. She received, as a member of The Go-Go's, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011. There is currently a campaign to get the pioneering band The Go-Go's in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

She also dedicates her time to the charity she co-founded in 2014, Animal People Alliance, which services the street animals of Kolkata while providing employment to the survivors of human trafficking and other vulnerable people.

She lives in Bangkok, Thailand with her husband Morgan Mason, whom she married in 1986.
