Tina Malia

Born near Denver, Colorado, Tina began her musical training at a very young age as a classical pianist. Taught by her mother, a concert pianist and opera singer from Korea, she rigorously studied piano until the age of 12. At that time, her passion for music moved from piano to voice. At age 15, Tina began learning the guitar, and at 16, she graduated from high school and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder as a Voice Performance Major. After one year, driven by a strong inner quest, she moved to Hawaii where she began exploring and writing her own music. In 1996, Tina worked as a recording artist and co-producer for Music for Little People and Earthbeat! Records in Redway, CA.. The following year she attended The Recording Workshop, a sound engineering school, in order to learn the technical aspects of studio recording. In 1998, Tina moved to the San Francisco bay area and started working on her solo recording, "Shores of Avalon." During that time she also began working as a studio vocalist, a sound engineer, and performing in various groups as a back-up singer, with such artists as Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra, Ty Burhoe (Curandero), Bill Douglas (Hearts of Space), Steve Gorn, Lost at Last, Danny Heines and others.

Naturally blessed with a crystal voice, Tina Malia’s touching music and angelic presence have drawn devoted fans from coast to coast and around the world. Inspired by her roots in American Folk music, ancient Celtic modalities, Middle Eastern rhythms and mystical tones of India, Malia magically weaves sounds and prayers from around the world into a beautiful palette for her voice. Tina Malia has been compared to such legendary singer/songwriters as Loreena McKennitt, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Carole King and Sarah McLachlan. Malia's debut, Shores of Avalon, was voted #1 Vocal Release of 2001 by Backroads Music for its ability to "cast a spell on the listener." Inspired by many musical and spiritual traditions from around the world, Tina's writing style is contemplative, devotional, and joyous in nature.

Tina Malia is an integral part of a grass roots musical movement stemming from the West Coast and Hawaii, which is dedicated to bridging people of all ages and color through song, celebration and prayer. She tours and performs with such bands as Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra, Hamsa Lila, Shimshai and the Natural Mystique Ensemble, Sasha Butterfly, Lost at Last, Freedom Tribe, and has opened for acts such as Michael Franti and Spearhead, David Grisman, Sound Tribe Sector Nine, Ram Dass and One Giant Leap. Tina Malia has performed at nearly every major festival across the West Coast United States including: Oregon Country Faire, Tribal Stomp, Health and Harmony, Earthdance, High Sierra, Sierra Nevada World Music festival, The Sacred World Music festival in L.A., the Whole Earth Fairs (in Davis, Los Angeles, and Arizona), the Seattle Hemp Festival, Reggae on the River, Horning’s Hideout, and many more. A powerful presence in this time, she has truly devoted her life to uplifting and healing the spirit through music. Whether she is playing solo or with a band, she has the ability to deeply move and enchant her listeners.

Tina Malia is a stunning performer whose vocals are the audio equivalent of pure sunshine. Up until now she had recorded 2 CDs: the already classic ?Shores of Avalon'? and the beautifully chant-filled ?Jaya Bhagavan? (w/Shimshai). On ?The Silent Awakening? Tina follows in the footsteps of ?Shores of Avalon,'? in a singer-songwriter mode, with multi-faceted world instrumentation and a deeper rhythmic flavor with African drums, marimbas, Indian clay drums and more. Malia's organic, peaceful messages come through loud and clear on 'Heal This Land', 'Heaven', & 'Beholden', all of which would work well as themes dedicated to world peace, conservation, etc. The pristine production of each and every one of these songs is remarkable and paves the way for her material to be heard far and wide. Her cast of musicians includes some of the finest players in the fertile west coast music scene: Greg Ellis (percussionist from Vas), Robert Powell, Darol Anger, Sasha Butterfly, Lakshmi Devi, Kim Atkinson, Shimshai, Manose, and co-producer John Alevizakis. With each listen the songs travel deeper inside your consciousness, inviting repeated play. She casts a beautiful spell with the flowing continuity from track to track. So far, this CD looks to be a top candidate for 'Best of 2006', not to mention cover art of the year, and lends itself beautifully to gratifying listening and enthusiastic sharing with family, friends & community
