Description

Greetings!

I think you will like this retelling of an old Punjabi story, from northern India. The main characters are the Angulee family, which means ?finger? in Punjabi. The idea is that they are like five fingers of a hand that knows how to work together, creating strength in unity. When a troll (ugly but not too scary for little ones!) realizes the united power of this family, he offers them a treasure in exchange for his life. The plot thickens when a greedy neighbor and his family try their luck with the troll, and learn a priceless lesson beyond jewels!

As a teacher and mother, I have radar for stories that give virtue and victory, so when first I heard The Five Fingered Family, I loved it immediately. This is an old tale of India, passed down from generation to generation as are our folk tales. One of my mentors, Bibiji Inderjit Kaur, heard this story from her grandmother as she sat on her bed, alongside her siblings and cousins. I took that story, with her permission, and enhanced it to speak to children of all ages.

Knowing my artistic ability could not match the vision I had for these illustrations, I sought help. I have a friend from Italy (although she lives in Los Angeles) who had sent me some illustrations she had done of the Indian Sikh masters in watercolor. I was struck by the soft beauty and purity of her style. They were so authentically Indian looking! I knew she was the one for the book?s illustrations.

Enjoy with my blessings!
