Snatam Kaur
Snatam Kaur was introduced to music and spiritual practice at an early age. Schooled in kirtan, meditation, and Gurmukhi, the Sanskrit-based language of Sikh scriptures from Northern India, the young Snatam Kaur began to develop the devotion and skills that have grown and blossomed into a compelling, profound talent. Snatam Kaur's parents brought her up in the Sikh tradition as taught by Yogi Bhajan. From an early age, she practiced yoga and meditation daily and her mother taught her Gurmukhi. "My mother taught me the alphabet on my way to school every morning," recalls Snatam. Her Sikh community augmented these lessons with instruction in kirtan (devotional chanting). "Through these experiences, I learned the pronunciation," she says, "but also I learned the passion for what I was singing because these gatherings were so spiritual." As a child, Snatam also had training in voice, violin, guitar, and percussion. She obtained a solid foundation in Western classical music while playing violin in an orchestra and giving solo performances. Her many opportunities to use and expand her musical talent in a spiritual setting emphasized for her the connection between her music and spirituality. "I learned about the importance of sound currents from Yogi Bhajan," she says, "but I also had the personal experience of how the energy of these sacred words can have a very real, positive effect."
Snatam further explored the power of sound in India. After high school, her love for the Indian musical tradition and for children took her to Miri Piri Academy, a boarding school for children in India. She spent time taking care of the young children, teaching physical education, and providing music for the children's morning and evening chanting. When she returned to the United States, she attended Mills College in Oakland, California, where she obtained a degree in biochemistry, taught yoga classes, and shared her chants with Western audiences. But India called her back. After touring and performing Kirtan in northern India, Snatam settled in Amritsar where she studied music with the accomplished ragi (Indian master of Sikh-style kirtan) Bhai Hari Singh. This was a great honor for her, and particularly meaningful because Singh was the same teacher who had taught her mother when she was just a little girl. Snatam embraced everything that Singh taught her, from the technical aspects of the notes, to the ability to sing with presence and awareness. The lessons took place in Singh's home, where Snatam was welcomed by the entire family--daughters, sons, and grandchildren. While in Amritsar, Snatam lived next door to the Golden Temple, considered the world's holiest Sikh temple. Sacred music resonates from inside the temple from about 2:30 in the morning to midnight every day-sounds created by world-class masters of Sikh kirtan. This enabled Snatam to continually soak in the essence of the Sound Current. Upon returning to the US from India, Snatam began her career as a recording artist with a band called the Peace Family. She served as the band's lead singer and, with two skilled and accomplished musicians - Livtar Singh and GuruGanesha Singh, had her first opportunity to write songs. Two years later she began to develop her own sound and style and embarked on a very fruitful solo career.

Dear Snatam Kaur, My beloved daughter died 9 months ago after a long illness. It was not until I listened to Ra Ma Da Sa on your Grace cd that I felt peace. In fact, something maybe a bit more like bliss. As I drove home from a visit with a friend I had the cd playing and it was as if I was falling back into time which was collapsing into itself - I then realized I was falling back into the Divine. I don't understand what happened yet I do know it was happening because I was listening to you. For this I am eternally grateful.

Saw her in NJ. I now just refer to her as The Voice! This is an extremely talented group of musicians that will never disappoint. They are so in tune with one another, it's exciting to watch. Powerful words delivered in songs with scintillating rhythms... is just the beginning of this experience. The event doesn't just appeal to the right brain. The body, mind and soul are engaged entirely as Snatam and company guides you through chanting, breathing, meditation and my personal favorite... her spiritual words of wisdom shared through her stories. Everyone are welcomed and it will be whatever experience you need it to be. The gentleman next to me had a bandana over his face and was lying down meditating. Being my first time seeing her, closing my eyes was the last thing I wanted to do. The women is HOT! Its seemed impossible not to stare!! Kudos to the closed eyed meditators. I am not there yet... Snatam is absolutely wonderful!! I saw her live last night at the Centennial Theatre in North Van, BC. It was one of the best spiritual experiences I've had in the last year, bought two of her CD's and signed up for this website tonight. I came home and stayed up until 3am downloading the CD's into my ITunes Library and syncing them onto my iPhone so I can listen anywhere. Listened to both CD's ( "PREM" & "GRACE") over and over since getting them. I had only listened on YouTube previously. I'm looking into changing my Yoga practice by adding Kundalini to the Chopra Style which I already know. Thanks so much to everyone who brought Snatam here and to Nirinjan Kaur for her beautiful presence on stage last night. Sat Nam.

I came across her music being played at a spa in Dallas. The music was so beautiful and peaceful I had to ask about it and was told it was Snatam Kaur. I found her website and I love her music and her chanting. I am Baha'i by faith and it teaches me to be open to all of the other religions as they are from the same Creator. I had never heard Sikh chanting before. It is so spiritual and so peaceful. She is a wonderful addition to my journey.

I don't know much about Sikh traditions but follow another Indian spiritual tradition. Snatam Kaur's voice uplifts my soul like no other musician I've ever heard in my life. So healing, compassionate, and inspiring.

I saw her in Marin on Friday and all those attending the concert had ONE voice, it was rhythmic and transcending - I felt incredibly blessed to be a part of the experience. Yesterday I found the video of her "rockin out" in Spirit Fest and find it absolutely exulting. I play it on my laptop over and over. I would to purchase it if it were available. It has shifted my vibration and starts my day with strength, love and faith. When my mother, sister, and I sing along with her while listening to her CDs we feel incredible joy, harmony. Thank you for sharing Snatam Kaur, you and your energy radiate peace and love. We feel it.

Her music is so beautiful. She relaxes me right away. I went to see her show in Phila a year or so ago . It was nice but I felt bad for thewhole "band" who had glaring bright lights at thier eyes all night. Though Snatam let me introduce myself and get a hug (My treasure) I felt she needed an eye rest. I loved the instruments too. and the family was there!!! How nice!.

I attended the concert on Friday night and was blown away, it was absolutely awesome ,her voice is so melodic I wonder if this is what the angels sound like when they are praising "The Creator".This was the first time I've experienced her.
I think she expresses the Divine so beautifully, as if she were a voice for my soul. I enjoyed her concert the other night, I sang my heart out with her. I saw Snatam perform in Santiago on Friday night and was blown away. I literally could feel waves of energy in my hands at the end of the concert, when I raised them up and turned my palms toward the stage. I would like to thank her. I also want to say that I love the Spanish version of Long Time Sun. It was so beautiful to here, especially here in Chile. And / but I also wanted to offer an alternative translation. The most common one, which was sung Friday, has too many vowels IMHO. Here is an idea for Snatam if you can pass it along. Snatam Kaur has become a huge influence on our hectic lives. We travel almost 35 miles for our children to attend school each day. Our mornings are often filled with Snatam's amazing voice--resonating through our sleepy car. We will be blessed to see her live for the first time on Sept. 10, 2010 in NYC and we would love to request 2 songs. While we love all the songs...there are two which the my daughters (ages 9 & 12 particularly love and I've dedicated one of them to their journey through life through my blessings and wishes for them (Long Time Sun). The other would be Thy Grace--None of us are blessed with the beauty and dedication of Snatam 's blessed talents but nonetheless, we belt out the beauty of her music with abandon and swear that it grounds us in an ever-frantic and crazy world that we are all trying to cope with. Not sure if Snatam will ever see this email but she should know that she touches our family, our yoga practice, our lives and sanity and mindfulness and we are so grateful to have her and her voice and message in our lives...

Snatam's music changed my life. I found her when my sister-in-law was battling pancreatic cancer and we sang several of Snatam's songs at a healing ceremony. Since then I've purchased every CD made, and shared her music with many of my friends and family members. I first heard Snatam Kaur at a seminar conducted by Nithya Shanti. I had a phenomenal experience in terms of peace and serenity. The sublime effect of her voice is ineffable. I loved all the music pieces I heard by Snatam Kaur. I wish she performs in Bangalore, India in the near future.
