Introduction to Vinyasa Yoga
The term Vinyasa or Vinyasa Flow may cover a wide variety of yoga classes. Vinyasa
means a movement synchronized to breath. You move from one pose into the next based
on inhale and exhale rhythm. K. Pattabhi Jois created the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga
series, but Ashtanga and Vinyasa differ in one key point. While the asanas are the
same, in Vinyasa the practitioner can choose to put them in any order to suit their
need or mood, like a freestyle Ashtanga. In traditional Ashtanga, the series are
not interrupted and a specific order is followed.

A Vinyasa class usually incorporates Sun Salutations, flowing from one asana to
another while coordinating the breath. Vinyasa is considered to have more movement
than just the stretching you might expect in a Hatha class, and has many aerobic
benefits. The pace of the class, the incorporation of chanting, and its aerobic
intensity depends upon the teacher, since there is no single rulebook.
