Svaroopa Yoga
Svaroopa Yoga was founded by Tara Berch (now Swami Nirmalanada) as a way of doing
Hatha Yoga from the inside out. It focuses slowly and gently releasing the tension
in the muscles surrounding the spine. Poses are performed with an abundance of props
and guidance from teachers.
The progression of poses is designed to start at the tailbone and slowly release
tension little by little up the spine. A Svaroopa Yoga class ends with a student
in Tadasana (Standing Mountain) without any tension in the spine.
Svaroopa Yoga is more consciousness-oriented than physically demanding, and its
focus is on opening consciousness through the particular application of asana and
movement.
There are 120 poses in Svaroopa Yoga, but the performance of these asana is more
focused on the release of tension than on the perfection of flexibility. Svaroopa
Yoga is suitable for people of all levels of fitness or physical limitation.
