Spirit Voyage Review:

Sada Sat Kaur`s newest release Mantra Masala is filled with an exciting range of musical styles. The CD opens with two really fun, upbeat tracks. The first, Har Har Har Har Gobinday, pulls in flavors of a country rock song with its steel string guitars and the sound of brushes on the drum set. It`s got that `roll down the window and feel the wind in your hair` kind of sound - makes you want to take to the road and drive - or take the yoga mat and fly! The second track, Adi Shakti - Bhangra Mix, is gets you up on your feet and dancing with it`s lively bhangra beats, lively call and answer vocals that build as the track progresses with some fun `heys` thrown in to pump up the energy even further.

On the third track, Sada Sat Kaur slows things down with a beautiful track called Love in My Heart. On the album cover, she says the album "is dedicated to my teacher Yogi Bhajan: You are the love in my heart." This track starts with a beautiful repetition of the phrase "You are the Love in My Heart" sung like a mantra, followed by a movement from one mantra to the another in the same soothing melody with a really simple soothing instrumentation rolling behind the mantra and deep, gentle percussion carrying through the track.

This track is followed by a really rich version of the chant Sochai Soch from Japji Sahib, which features Sada Sat Kaur`s vocals over a deep bed of instrumentation including some lovely Indian strings that play with Sada Sat Kaur`s voice in wonderful ways.

The fifth track is a really fun and lively version of Gobinday Mukunday that has makes you want to jump up and start line-dancing. It`s got great rhythm and is just straight up fun!

On the sixth track, Wah Yantee: Patanjali`s song, Sada Sat Kaur delivers a beautiful track reminiscent of some of her offerings on her previous album Shashara, with a slow sweet melody accompanied by harmonium and rich ambient sounds accompanied by ethereal pedal steel and rich and gentle percussion.

Wahe Guru Jio with traditional Indian instrumentation follows a traditional and much beloved kirtan style of a rhythm that builds throughout the track, getting faster and faster as the mantra progresses, raising the energy levels higher and higher. When the rythm of the mantra reaches a frenzy, Sada Sat Kaur`s vocals come floating over the mantra with the most incredible soaring richness to give you this amazing sense of calmness layered over the top.

The final track, Guru Guru Wahe Guru, is a chorus of heavenly vocals and strings with Sada Sat Kaur`s voice lulling you into a state of deep mediation. It is a lovely way to close this album whose range of style and tempo is a true mantra masala!

Mantra Masala Meditations & Notes from Sada Sat Kaur

Har Har Har Har Gobinday
To guide you and sustain you. This mantra has the power to lift you beyond difficult circumstances, sadness and depression into abundance and prosperity. Dance with joy!

Adi Shakti: Bhangra Mix
Call upon the Creative Mother Power of the Universe to free you of insecurities and find the deep understanding of the cosmos. Manifest the pranic power, the source of your creativity. Dance from your soul and chant from your heart in praise to the Universal Mother, as she nurtures you and shields you.

Love in My Heart
To create the balance between earth and heavens, and be in bliss.
Sit in Easy Pose, place your left palm against your heart and right hand over left. Feel calm, secure and blissful as you both receive and send blessings.

Sochai Soch
These words of Guru Nanak take you beyond your thoughts to transform your fate into a destiny of the true knowledge of the Infinite. As you sit and chant these powerful words let your mind go beyond its thinking to rest in the “naad”, the sound current of the mantra and be at peace.

Gobinday Mukanday
Eliminates karmic blocks and errors of the past. Brings peace to the world. You will know that the Infinite lives within you. Sit in Easy Pose with your eyes closed, looking at your third eye point between your eyebrows. As you pronounce the last part of each word in the mantra (gobin-day, mukan-day, etc.) gently pull your navel point in.

Wah Yantee: Patanjali’s Song
Chant and connect to the Infinite energy of the universe that Generates, Organizes and Delivers. The entire creation becomes your friend as this mantra awakens your intuition. The practice of this mantra, given by Rishi Patanjali, is the culmination of thousands of years of prayer.

Wahe Guru Jio
A mantra of ecstasy to bring great happiness into your life. Sit in Easy Pose. Fold your hands (interlacing your fingers) in front of your heart, and extend just the index fingers up, touching each other. Chant “Wah” from the navel point, “He” (“Hay”) from the heart, and “Guru” from the lips.

Guru Guru Wahe Guru Guru Ram Das Guru
The Mantra of Miracles. Brings the spiritual guiding light and protective grace of Guru Ram Das. Sit in Easy Pose. Bring your hands in front of your heart to form a cup and catch all blessings, healing and love in your hands as you chant. Let these blessings enter into your heart and soul.

Sada Sat Kaur

Sada Sat Kaur's name represents within yogic circles the alchemy of everyday custom turned into high art. For over 30 years she has toured the world, chanting mantras and singing kirtan in ashrams, concert halls, schools, public parks.

In India, audiences have been known to flock to her as if she were the Beatles. "We play to crowds of 200,000 people," she says. "They want to touch you and get your autograph. You go to these parks when it's a Sikh holiday, and they hear that these American Sikhs are going to sing, and you can't even see the end of the sea of people."

As the decades have passed, that sea of people has never managed to hoist Sada Sat Kaur toward a recording studio-until now. "The feeling inside myself was that this was all going to happen when it was supposed to happen," she says, "and it did."

In 2000 she was hanging around the watermelon tent at a Summer Solstice retreat in the mountains of New Mexico when she fell into an exchange with musician and producer Jeremy Toback. "We just got to talking and Jeremy and I were like, `Let's do an album." The result of that chance encounter is Angels' Waltz, a debut disc from a 56-year-old homeopath and yoga instr
