Release Date: June 21, 2011 Pre-Order Now!
Kundalini Remix reveals a divine convergence. Leave your separateness behind. In these sacred rhythms, you will discover that we are all one.
See you in the temples. See you on the dance floor.
The DJs on Kundalini Remix have been charged with a sacred task: go into the cave,
get the mantra, mix it with your essence and return it to the people. This is the modern-day hero’s journey in musical form. Listen. Go deep. Find the truth.
Lean into it. The power of the warrior-saint archetype is alive and well in these rhythms.
Devotional Electronic Music: The ultimate blend of sacred and worldly. It takes everything into consideration and carries us into a new space of hope,
divinity, and boundless energy.
The DJs who worked on this album:
Cheb i Sabbah was born in Algeria of Berber (Amazigh)
descent and moved to Paris as a teenager and became a DJ by chance. By the late 1980s, residing in San Francisco, he was internationally pushing boundaries on
the dance floor, seeking ways to infuse Asian, Arabic and African sounds into the mix. Then as the “world music” movement unfolded, Cheb i Sabbah took the
inspired step of recording traditional and classical musicians from India, Pakistan and Africa, effectively transforming those compositions into sonic landscapes,
thus creating a new style of electronic music “composed” by a DJ.
With seven landmark recordings on the Six Degrees Records label, Sabbah remains
a DJ at heart, but he is also something more. “As a DJ you have ears,” says Sabbah, “this is my instrument, you know what you want to hear on the dance floor
or in producing music.”
An innovator in one of the most contemporary musical realms, he is clearly committed to creating new forms.
“But at the same time,” says Sabbah, “the most important focus for me is to keep the musical tradition alive. For example, folk, trance and healing
musicians are struggling to make a living and teach the young generations. Once those musicians go, it's over, then what?” As an “Outernational”
DJ to defender of ancient traditions, Sabbah is a true musical iconoclast and visionary in the electronica scene.
From the crowded confines
of nightclubs to major festivals, Cheb i Sabbah enjoys a worldwide reputation as a magician of the dance floor. On stage he often spins accompanied by
live musicians, dancers and massive projected visuals, interwoven and juxtaposed as the spirit moves him.
Desert Dwellers has its roots
in the dance collective known as Moontribe, and tribal-electronic rituals deep within the vast expanse of the Southwest deserts. A longtime musical
collaboration between Amani Friend & Treavor Moontribe, Desert Dwellers formed as a ‘virtual band’, using the web as a collaborative space in which
albums are produced that blend the modern edge of electronica with the ancient sounds of cultures past. Desert Dwellers has grown from its duo based roots
to include the production work of Rara Avis, and many amazing collaborations with vocalists and instrumentalists from all over the world; this has led to
the prolific production of many genre-blending uptempo and downtempo grooves that make for truly memorable experiences. Skillfully blending deep bass,
earthy percussion, etheric voices and culture-crossing instrumentation into a sonic incense for mind and body, Desert Dwellers offers a spellbinding
hybrid with echoes of our tribal past and future.
Drumspyder: DEDICATED TO THE DRUM - The rhythms and tonalities of the Mediterranean
are the center of Drumspyder's sound, but melodic flavors from India and Afro-Latin syncopations are also heard in this unique excursion through global
rhythms. The beats & bass foundation ranges from slinky downtempo to electro house, with influences from tribal house, tropical bass, and dub.
Original tracks, beats, samples and bass collide in novel ways for each set, and the whole is ignited by live Arabic percussion (doumbek, riqq, and tar)
played with consummate skill.
Hailing from San Francisco's vibrant dance and indie-circus scene, Scott Sterling was percussionist and
composer for the innovative AWD and Xeno ensembles before he took up Arabic percussion and collaborated with dancer Kristina Cañizares as
music director of the Nekyia. Together they created a sensual fusion of bellydance with latin, jazz, and burlesque influences.
Since 2009 he has struck out on his own to create his distinctive brand of percussion-centered Mediterranean fusion.
His tracks and remixes have since appeared on Dakini, Wonderwheel, Desert Trax, Caravan, Water Music and Six Degrees, as well as numerous bellydance DVDs.
As percussionist and remixer he has collaborated with some of the most notable figures in global dance fusion, including Nickodemus, the Spy from Cairo,
Makyo, Jef Stott, and David Starfire. In addition he has served as music director for two of the highly acclaimed Oakland Crucible theater productions.
DJ Sharu is a multidimensional DJ / Producer / Musician, Healer, and Yoga and Meditation Teacher. While Dj'ing in the Los
Angeles underground, Sharu had a spiritual awakening. The music that he was playing no longer resonated with the higher vibration and sensitivity
that he had experienced. At that point, he stopped DJ'ing full time and began his path of self inquiry and esoteric studies. After a few years
of intense searching and studying he finally found something that clicked in a cave dwelling at the Tree of Life in Costa Rica….Kundalin
Yoga and Meditation. He totally dedicated himself to the practice living in an ashram for 2 years….but something was calling his name the
whole time. He would listen to the Mantras of Kundalini Yoga while practicing and teaching and he would hear the perfect dance beat that would go with it. Slowly and mindfully, he began to do what DJs do best; mix the two together. Combining sacred sound current (Naad) and modern dance beats, Sharu provides a drug-free high that has been making crowds shake their chakras all the while chanting the codes of light, love and the divine

Makyo:Formed in 1993, Makyo (a term used in Zen Buddhism to refer to a world of confusing and seemingly mystical hallucinations that one can fall into during deep meditation) came about from a fascination with the exploration if inner space and the nature of our society. Incorporating Eastern philosophies of sound and spirituality into the whole spectrum of 90's electronica. One of the first "zen dub" projects and still one of the best.
At the heart of Makyo is founding member Gio, who writes all the music and plays most of it. Before Makyo, Gio spent the early 80's in Kyoto, Japan studying Zen and playing in hardcore punk bands. Gio moved to Taipei and then Boston where he joined the experimental noise cassette trading underground (alongside many other early Silent Records artists). It was during this time that Kim Cascone may have stumbled across the name Gio for the first time. During this period Gio played in "psychedelic Branca-influenced guitar ensembles” and DJed a free-style radio show on WZBC.
Makyo was formed in 1993 and released their first track on the Planet Dog Records compilation "Feed Your Head". After a series of compilation appearances, Makyo released their first full-length album on Silent Records in 1996 (Rasa Bhava, SR9606). According to the liner notes for Rasa Bhava, Makyo was Gio and Ikeda with Kamigashima on guitar for onetrack. An important contribution to this album came in the form of a remix by Bill Laswell.
Kim had already been familiar with Makyo and, after a visit to San Francisco by Gio, decided to release a full length. Unfortunately, this was during the time that the label was being sold, and by the time the CD came out, Raul had control of Silent Records. Many feel that, even though this album was released after the transfer of ownership, this is still a Kim Cascone release. Rod Modell's Waveform Transmission CD is the other release that fits this category.
Makyo released 3 more full-length albums and has appeared on such labels as Planet Dog, Law and Auder, East-West, Interchill, Transient, Six Degrees, Return to the Source, and Dakini Records as well as recording with Natacha Atlas! Gio became a regular on Tokyo's club scene doing mostly chill-out rooms. He has appeared with the likes of Mixmaster Morris, The Orb's Alex Patterson, Ken Ishii, Haruomi Hosono, Tsuyoshi, Underworld, Solar Quest, and more. He is currently running the popular Dakini Nights nightclub and Dakini Records label in Japan and spends his days writing as a film critic. He still DJs and Makyo is still active.
FIVE SEASONS is a music project of Daniel Voss - known from the common projects with his brother Roland Voss: LEMONGRASS, WEATHERTUNES, JASMON and co-founder of the label LEMONGRASSMUSIC. Five Seasons was founded in 2007, having released the first productions on various compilations. The debut "On The Road" came out on Lemongrassmusic in 2009. The second Five Seasons album "By The Sea" was released in June 2011 taking you on a music trip to Brazil and Latin America - with sunny vibes and groovy beats making this work a wonderful summer album.

Artist BioSnatam Kaur Snatam Kaur was introduced to music and spiritual practice at an early age. Schooled in kirtan, meditation, and Gurmukhi, the Sanskrit-based language of Sikh scriptures from Northern India, the young Snatam Kaur began to develop the devotion and skills that have grown and blossomed into a compelling, profound talent. Snatam Kaur's parents brought her up in the Sikh tradition as taught by Yogi Bhajan. From an early age, she practiced yoga and meditation daily and her mother taught her Gurmukhi. "My mother taught me the alphabet on my way to school every morning," recalls Snatam. Her Sikh community augmented these lessons with instruction in kirtan (devotional chanting). "Through these experiences, I learned the pronunciation," she says, "but also I learned the passion for what I was singing because these gatherings were so spiritual." As a child, Snatam also had training in voice, violin, guitar, and percussion. She obtained a solid foundation in Western classical music while playing violin in an orchestra and giving solo performances. Her many opportunities to use and expand her musical talent in a spiritual setting emphasized for her the connection between her music and spirituality. "I learned about the importance of sound currents from Yogi Bhajan," she says, "but I also had the personal experience of how the energy of these sacred words can have a very real, positive effect." Snatam further explored the power of sound in India. After high school, her love for the Indian musical tradition and for children took her to Miri Piri Academy, a boarding school for children in India. She spent time taking care of the young children, teaching physical education, and providing music for the children's morning and evening chanting. When she returned to the United States, she attended Mills College in Oakland, California, where she obtained a degree in biochemistry, taught yoga classes, and shared her chants with Western audiences. But India called her back. After touring and performing Kirtan in northern India, Snatam settled in Amritsar where she studied music with the accomplished ragi (Indian master of Sikh-style kirtan) Bhai Hari Singh. This was a great honor for her, and particularly meaningful because Singh was the same teacher who had taught her mother when she was just a little girl. Snatam embraced everything that Singh taught her, from the technical aspects of the notes, to the ability to sing with presence and awareness. The lessons took place in Singh's home, where Snatam was welcomed by the entire family--daughters, sons, and grandchildren. While in Amritsar, Snatam lived next door to the Golden Temple, considered the world's holiest Sikh temple. Sacred music resonates from inside the temple from about 2:30 in the morning to midnight every day-sounds created by world-class masters of Sikh kirtan. This enabled Snatam to continually soak in the essence of the Sound Current. Upon returning to the US from India, Snatam began her career as a recording artist with a band called the Peace Family. She served as the band's lead singer and, with two skilled and accomplished musicians - Livtar Singh and GuruGanesha Singh, had her first opportunity to write songs. Two years later she began to develop her own sound and style and embarked on a very fruitful solo career.

The delicate sounds of harp, piano, and guitar blend with lovingly intertwined voices amid lush celestial soundscapes. Their concerts are group celebrations for peace-joyous and loving occasions that embody the duo's profound belief in music as a universal language uniting all the world's peoples, cultures and traditions. Mirabai Ceiba is a duo consisting of guitarist/singer Markus Sieber and singer/harpist/pianist Angelika Baumbach. They come from different parts of the world. Markus is East German. Angelika was born in Tucson, Arizona, and grew up in a small village near Mexico City, the daughter of a Mexican mother and German father. Together, Angelika and Markus have forged engaging new style of world devotional music blending Gurmukhi mantras from the Kundalini Yoga tradition with original songs in English and Spanish that reflect a Native American influence and also draw words of wisdom from Rumi, Thich Nhat Hanh, Guru Nanak and Yogi Bhajan. Through exquisitely crafted recordings like their CD A Hundred Blessings, Mirabai Ceiba weave a beguiling tapestry from these diverse influence and sources. And that's what the music feels like: a beneficent and abundant gift from the universe. In concert, they inspire all present to chant together in a spirit of compassionate love and Oneness. Even the name Mirabai Ceiba embodies the influences of both India and Native Latin America. Mirabai (1498-1547) was a Hindu mystical singer. Her songs express the longing of the individual self to be one with the universal self, represented by Krishna. For Angelika and Markus, the name Mirabai "is the exploration, the devotion, the inspiration in all the different aspects of divinity." And the Ceiba is a sacred tree of Latin America which is never cut and grows very tall. "We wish our music could be like the Ceiba tree," say Markus and Angelica, "with roots deep in Mother Earth and branches extending far and wide into Father Sky." | | Episode Description | Episode Date | Download | | Special Guest: Mirabai Ceiba | Thursday, September 01, 2011 | | | Special Guest: Mirabai Ceiba | Thursday, January 13, 2011 | | Nirinjan Kaur Nirinjan Kaur was born in Vancouver, B.C. to a Kundalini Yoga practicing, Sikh family. With two musical parents, shefound her love for singing at an early age. Her father still tells stories of how Nirinjan could be heard singing her heart out to her favorite songs, whether they were in the car going to school, or just playing around the house. As time went on, she became very interested in Kundalini Yoga and the Sikh faith, and became a certified Kundalini Yoga teacher at age 13. Sacred chanting goes hand in hand with both of these traditions, and Nirinjan quickly found a merging of two loves: spirituality and singing. She began singing among her family and community, at yoga gatherings and Sikh services.

In 2003, when she was 15, she began attending Miri Piri Academy in Amritsar, India. While in high school there, she studied Classical Indian Music with a focus on Gurbani Kirtan (sacred Sikh singing) with a master, Ustaad Narinder Singh Sandhu. After 3 years, she graduated from Miri Piri Academy with newfound experiences of life, as well as of music and singing.
In the summer of 2007 her first album Aquarian was released. Also, that summer Nirinjan Kaur and Siri Amrit Singh were happily married. Siri Amrit, as well as being born into a Sikh family, also grew up with a love of Gurbani Kirtan. They are now enjoying their new life together in Eugene, Oregon. | Episode Description | Episode Date | Download | | Special Guest: Nirinjan Kaur | Thursday, January 27, 2011 | | GuruGanesha Singh Back in 1973, a young man left an up-and-coming rock band called Cat's Cradle to walk the spiritual path, embracing the Sikh faith and the practice of Kundalini Yoga. It was a hard choice. But his spiritual guide, the world-renowned master of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan, told the young man, "Whatever you leave behind to walk this path will re-manifest later, in a higher form."
Today the world knows that man as GuruGanesha Singh, a guitarist of exceptional grace and expressiveness, a singer, songwriter, producer and entrepreneur who has been a leading figure in establishing World Sacred Music as one of the fastest-rising and creatively fertile genres on the current scene. With a brand new album, Kundalini Surjhee, an exciting new live project with golden-voiced singer Tina Malia titled Song of the Soul, and an on-going musical collaboration with the incomparable Snatam Kaur (in its12th year and still thriving), GuruGanesha feels that he's now experiencing the complete realization of the prophecy Yogi Bhajan made all those years ago.
"What's happening now is a full manifestation," he says. "All the same pieces are there that were there in '73, but they've re-manifested in a higher form. All the spiritual and musical work I've done for the past 38 years has been preparing me for this." GuruGanesha is one of those rare individuals who combine the heart and soul of an artist with the clear, quick mind of a seasoned and wise business leader. By the time he started Spirit Voyage Records in January, 2000 he had already made a substantial financial success as CEO of Sandler Training Institute of Virginia, a company dedicated to providing integrity based sales training for the high-tech industry. For many people, that would suffice as a life's achievement, but for GuruGanesha it was just a prelude.
The first year of the 21st Century proved a musical watershed for him. He released the album A Game of Chants with Guru Singh, Thomas Barquee and the Grammy-winning singer Seal and began to record as part of the Peace Family, a group featuring the extraordinary, angelic voice of Snatam Kaur. Becoming Snatam's manager as well as her guitarist and co-vocalist in 2000, GuruGanesha helped launch Snatam as a solo artist with the Spirit Voyage album release Prem. It was the first in a string of outstanding CDs, including Shanti, Grace, Anand and Liberation's Door that established the diminutive yet divinely guided singer as one of the preeminent voices in the growing world of mantra, kirtan and devotional music.
GuruGanesha's shimmering, evocative guitar melodies and supple chordal rhythms played an integral role in creating Snatam's signature sound. Their collaboration over the years has been extremely fruitful and always dedicated to the service of humanity and the cause of world peace. In a similar way, GuruGanesha has helped foster the careers of producer Thomas Barquee, the devotional duo Mirabai Ceiba, Nirinjan Kaur and now, Tina Malia.
In 2004 GuruGanesha made his debut as a solo artist with the album Grateful Ganesh, a title that pays playful tribute to the artist's all-time favorite band, the Grateful Dead. This was followed by Pure Ganesh in 2006 and Joy Is Now in 2008. All these releases are remarkable for their blend of heartfelt songcraft and sterling guitar work embracing a cornucopia of musical styles, from kirtan to jazz to raga to rock.
GuruGanesha has taken his unique musical vision to even greater heights on his new release Kundalini Surjhee, an album that includes several collaborations with Tina Malia, a gifted singer whose recordings span the devotional, pop and electronic fields and who has worked with such diverse artists as Carlos Santana, Jai Uttal, Bonnie Raitt, Kenny Loggins, India.Arie and Bassnectar. In addition to his usual robust touring schedule with Snatam Kaur, GuruGanesha will be hitting the road this year with Tina Malia on their Song of the Soul tour along with multi-instrumentalist Hans Christian, percussionist/remix master Craig Kohland and fast rising young bassist Jared May.
"I've been aware of Tina for a long time," says GuruGanesha. "I feel she's right up there with the best female devotional singers on the planet. And she has a beguiling pop side as well, which I love."
And so the young man who turned his back on rock and roll glory has become an icon and inspiration in another great musical genre-one with higher goals than fame or wealth.
"I'm 60 years old now and I've dedicated the past ten years of my life to sending healing sound currents out to the world," he says. "I'm not doing it for the money. I've already had success in business. It's been a labor of love and devotion, from starting Spirit Voyage, to my work with Snatam and now embarking on the Song of the Soul Tour with Tina. People on the planet are so stressed out now. They need the healing, soothing energy of the Divine Mother. When a Snatam Kaur or a Tina Malia sings, there is an innocence and purity to their voice that opens every heart in the room within seconds. Everyone in the audience will feel like a child again, in their mother's arms. For a time, they will forget all their troubles and cares, and rediscover their true identity as spiritual beings."

Don't miss your chance to book Gurunam as he travels world-wide on tour for the release of his new CD! Email Vyda at Vyda@independentyogi.com for more information. When Gurunam Singh graduated high school he was given a guitar and began composing simple songs. At 22 he found Yogi Bhajan and Sikh Dharma. He sang and played along with others and over time began leading chants in the early morning hours, before the rising of the sun. He spent lots of time in the solitude of his own home, and in the Sikh temple late at night, chanting to God and writing devotional songs. Gurunam's influences range from gospel, folk and country to classical Indian raag and traditional Sikh hymns to many of the current artists who sing devotional Hindu chants. He occasionally studied with some great ragi's such as Bhai Avtar Singh, from India, and Dya Singh from Australia. But his music is very simple. Anyone can chant along.

Stringer’s performance shaped the experience into a far more compelling musical encounter.” Kirtan (pronounced keer-tahn) originated in India, and is currently experiencing a worldwide renaissance as a participatory live music experience. Stringer has been widely profiled as one of the most innovative artists of the new American kirtan movement in publications as diverse as Time, Billboard, Yoga Journal and In Style. Stringer’s sound marries the transcendent mysticism of traditional Indian instruments with the exuberant, groove-oriented sensibility of American gospel, and he is regarded as one of the most gifted singers in the genre. Stringer, who is also an accomplished composer and multi-instrumentalist, has a special ability to bring people together and inspire them to sing. His work intends to create a modern and participatory theatrical experience out of the ancient traditions of kirtan and yoga, open to a multiplicity of interpretations, and accessible to all. Initially trained as a visual artist, filmmaker and jazz musician, Stringer had his formative experiences with chanting when film editing work brought him to the Siddha Yoga ashram in Ganeshpuri, India in 1990. A subsequent period of residence at the ashram laid the foundation for his continuing study of the ideas, practices and music of yoga. Since 2000, Stringer and a diverse ensemble of accompanying musicians have toured North America and Europe tirelessly, developing new venues for music, and expanding the audience for kirtan. He has introduced chanting for the first time to many seemingly unlikely cities, and through his consistent touring, has been instrumental in the development of a number of thriving local kirtan communities. He has also served as a volunteer teaching meditation and chanting to inmates at a number of correctional facilities in the United States. An articulate and engaging public speaker, he probes the dilemmas of the spirit with a wry and unorthodox sense of humor. Stringer frequently works in tandem with internationally celebrated yoga teachers, creating music for workshops led by John Friend, Shiva Rea, and Gurmukh, among others. Of particular note has been his friendship and collaboration with yoga teacher Saul David Raye, with whom he has created a number of recordings. Based in Los Angeles, Stringer has produced varied recordings with other celebrated World musicians including Azam Ali, Vas, Axiom of Choice, Rasa, Suzanne Teng, Shaman’s Dream and the Open Door Orchestra. Chant artists Donna Delory, Suzanne Sterling, and Girish went on to launch their own careers in the genre after spending time in Stringer’s performing and recording ensembles. His voice also appears on numerous soundtracks, including the blockbuster film Matrix Revolutions and the video game Myst. The CDs he has produced under his own name, “Brink”, “Japa”, “Mala” and “Divas & Devas”, are heard in yoga studios throughout the world.

Bach. As a young child, he was also exposed to Beethoven and the Romantic composers, beginning his own study of classical piano and composition at age nine with an internationally renowned teacher in Hamburg, Germany. His first compositions were piano pieces and string quartets, and he served as a church organist from age 16 to 18. By 16, however, Barquee's musical interest was shifting to pop and rock and roll and he even joined a punk rock band. In his mid-20's, Barquee was a busy recording session musician, and toured internationally with his own bands, had a publishing deal with ACT music & a record deal with EMI Japan, and was well on his way to European/Asian pop stardom. But somewhere along the line the world of pop stardom ended up feeling empty to Barquee. In search of new inspiration Barquee moved to Los Angeles in 1992, reinstating his dormant yoga practice (he had become a practitioner more than a decade earlier), and shifting his musical perspective to one more spiritually oriented. He still made his living from his musical skills, but stayed close to home: he engineered sessions, remixed tracks, even gave voice to a monkey in Disney's Jungle Book. One of Barquee's musical shifts was spurred by his first trip to India in the early 1980s, "I absorbed the music of India and I liked it," he says, "but at that point I wasn't ready to do anything with it; however, it did make a deep impression on me." In 2000, Barquee released his first recording since his pop-stardom days: Temple on Hearts of Space Music. He followed that with Missa and, most recently, The Sound of Om, both on Spirit Voyage Music. In making these recordings, Barquee took advantage of the breadth and depth of his spiritual practice and experience. In the last few years, Barquee has also written and produced numerous recordings for other artists, such as The Game of Chant featuring Seal, as well as Prem and Shanti for Snatam Kaur. He co-produced an album with Patrick Leonard, and scored several feature films and TV shows Thomas Barquee's The Sound of Om, on Spirit Voyage Music, is his newest release and an exciting new direction for this World Music artist. Comprised of seven Sanskrit chants, The Sound of Om resonates with depth and passion. The simple, ancient chants form the core of the recording, which is layered with an elaborate, exotic, and effective blend of Indian and Western instrumentation: bansuri, sarod, esraj, and santoor give equal time to keyboards, drums, percussion and bass, as well as electric and acoustic guitar. Barquee's music is smooth and cohesive, creating an exultant, melodious world. The simplicity of the chants on this recording enables you to easily join in. "Chanting the mantra is the most intimate experience you can have of them because you get pulled into the energy field of the chants." says Barquee. "These mantras are universal, they reach beyond language and embrace all religions. They express love, wisdom and joy." An artist of uncommon sensitivity, depth, and breadth, Barquee created modern melodies that seem uniquely well suited to the ancient mantras. Composing the music, Barquee felt guided by the mantra and experienced a strong synergy between the mantra and the music. The desire to express unity and transcend individual, spiritual, and musical barriers is the foundation on which Barquee has built his latest body of work.
Sat Kartar About Sat Kartar Sat Kartar’s chant music events are an experience, ranging from heartfelt ethereal devotion and longing, to groove-driven, spirited get-up-and-dance fun. Her voice wascharacterized by veteran music critic Alan diPerna, as “a crystalline vocal instrument, imbued with a welcoming, almost maternal warmth, and an evocative style of phrasing, reminiscent of Grace Slick.” Born in Atlanta, Ga., Sat Kartar’s childhood was full of music. Her father frequently performed at parties and restaurants. She played piano at 5, guitar at 14, and picked out everything by ear, on piano and guitar, from the Beatles to the Spanish classical Malaguena. She trained in ballet, and other dance forms. In college, she was gigging at dances and activist rallies, singing cover tunes of singer-songwriters and folk artists. One big influence was Joni Mitchell, whose open tunings and unusual melodies were a doorway and vicarious permission to explore uncharted territory. Sat Kartar’s signature “wrong way leftie” open guitar tuning style, (she plays left-handed, with an upside down right-handed guitar) are an influence of Ms. Mitchell’s sound, and double, in Sikh classical kirtan, as counterpoint modal accompaniment for raga compositions. Sat-Kartar has led sacred music events worldwide for 4 decades. She was a member of the first Kundalini yoga chant band, the Khalsa String Band. Several world renowned chant artists and yoga teachers, who currently make recordings, tour and teach today, were part of the KSB alumni and include Guru Singh, Krishna Kaur, Gurudass Singh, Gurudass Kaur, and Amar Singh & Sahib Amar Kaur. This band toured with Yogi Bhajan throughout the U.S. and Canada, during 2003-2004. Around this time, Sat-Kartar began what would be a life study of Northern Indian classical kirtan, with numerous Sikh musicians, called Ragis (Sikhs who sing devotionally in Eastern raga scales). “I wanted to bring the enchantment of this world of music to an American audience in a simpler form, so Westerners could appreciate the haunting beauty of these ancient scales.” In 1984 and '85, collaborating with veteran New Age producer Liv Khalsa, they created two timelessly beautiful recordings, Spirit in Blossom and Domain of Shiva, a group of hymns from the sacred Sikh texts, containing 4 raga scales. Symphonically orchestrated and ahead of its time, this music found a new audience, in the early stages of New Age Music movement. They also created two 31-minute meditations, which were re-mastered and re-released in 2009, called Ethereal Journey. Sat Kartar's quest for spiritual musical expression found form in a genre of dance electronica. A chance meeting with musician-producers Akinchina Das and Lalita Dasi, whose background was also Indian classical, turned out to be instant musical chemistry, and the techno group Overlords of the UFO was born. Their vinyl EPs Imagine and Transcendental Overdrive, released in 1994 and 1997 respectively, drew critical acclaim in the international dance and DJ market. In 2002, Sat Kartar began a decade of recording, and released a CD of chants for use with sadhana practice called Daily Practice. Co-produced with Dan Charnas, she and her band began extensively touring the Southwest with this CD, and garnered a regional following. She has since teamed with veteran producer Thomas Barquee for three recordings, Flow (2005), Listen (2007) and Call for the Beloved (2011). “Working with Thomas is a special experience. These recordings were new ground for me, a journey of faith into my heart.” In 2006 Sat Kartar began touring and offering music events internationally. She has sung on recordings of many kirtan artists which include Krishna Das, Wah!, Dave Stringer, Antion Vikram Singh, Siri Ved Kaur. Her Flow and Listen recordings have been reviewed in Yoga Journal. Her music is also featured on several Spirit Voyage compilations, with Kundalini mantra and Sikh sacred kirtan. Her passion is to share this sacred sound current with those seeking it, in myriad music forms, in a manner, that it will be accessible for all who are seeking the deep peace and joy it can bring.
