As a yogi I know and especially feel in my joints the amazing benefits of ingesting turmeric daily. Knowing that this amazing root also is highly beneficial for my pets Sir Duke the pitbull and Naven the cat, I first decided to start experimenting with my 7.5 year old pitbull’s tastebuds. First I decided to make a gravy for his food.
Dry Food Turmeric Gravy
1/4 tsp. Turmeric
2 Tbs. water
Dry dog food
Preparation: Heat all the ingredients together on the stove until the coconut oil is melted.
This recipe is for a dog about 55 lbs., please adjust amounts according to your pet size.
After having success with Sir Duke loving the turmeric and coconut oil in his food I went in search for a turmeric biscuit recipe and found none. What I did find that peaked my interest was a Rosemary and Cheddar biscuit because my dog loves cheddar cheese and I know rosemary is beneficial for so many ailments (listed below). Since the website was only selling the biscuits and not sharing the recipe, I set out to create my own version adding in turmeric into the goodness. So here you are – enjoy. Yes, humans can enjoy this too – try it as a biscotti with your morning yogi tea.
Turmeric & Cheddar Doggie Biscuits
Bake on cookie sheet at 350 for 30 minutes.
3 1/4 to 3 1/2 cups Gluten-free flour
1/2 cup oil
3 tsp. Turmeric powder
2 eggs (or egg replacer)
5 drops Rosemary essential oil
3 drops Black Pepper essential oil
1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese
3/4 cup Almond Milk
Preparation: In a bowl mix in the wet ingredients. When cooking with essential oils it is best to put to oil in an oil carrier before placing in the food for mixing. This helps the oil blend with all of the other ingredients. Then mix in the gluten free flour so that it is lightly mixed. Sprinkle a small amount of G.F. flour on a clean counter and kneed the ingredients into a dough texture. After creating a ball with the dough, roll out to approx 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut out your favorite shapes – or you can get creative with small balls, cookie size treats, etc…
Storage: Since there are no preservative these will last just under a week before they begin to mold. You can place them in the fridge inside of a tupperware container with a lightly damp napkin on top of the cookies under the lid so they don’t become too brittle. You can either cut the recipe in 1/2 or place 1/2 of the uncooked dough in plastic wrap in the fridge for baking at a later date. Dough will stay good for about a week. Also placing them in a brown paper bag is a good option too.
