Aaahhh...snack time! There's nothing like a pick me up in the middle of the day...a little crunchy courage to get us through until the end! Yogi Bhajan left us many recipes to support us in our yogic diets, like those in the book Foods for Health and Healing, and this little snack is yummy and healthy to boot!
Ginger is a master root. Its health benefits include everything from reducing inflammation and relieving menstrual cramps to preventing diabetic nephropathy and treating ovarian cancer.
Almonds are an excellent source of Vitamin E, alkalize the blood, and are thought to help control the mind and the nerves in Ayurvedic philosophy.
Honey is full of B vitamins, and even better, it fills your sweet tooth! (Watch out! Yogi Bhajan said that too much sugar made a woman lose her beauty...so don't go adding extra honey just because!)
A woman having her "moon time", as its called in Kundalini Yoga, may not be feeling not so great as a result. But its not necessary to suffer, according to Yogi Bhajan. He felt that much of the physical and emotional discomfort that is associated with the moon time is a result of being out of balance, due to a stressful life or living without an understanding of ayurvedic or yogic principles.
This is a delicious treat when you are feeling the blahs while menstruating! And its a tasty, healthy treat for men, too.
Sauteed Ginger and Almonds with Honey
Ingredients:
- 30 Unsalted almonds (with skins- Yogi Bhajan often said to remove the skins from almonds, but he said that these sauteed almonds should have their peels)
- 2 inches peeled, diced fresh ginger
- 1 Tbsp Ghee
- 1 Tbsp Honey
Instructions:
1. Put ghee and ginger in a s skillet over medium heat- saute, stirring occasionally until ginger begins to soften (approx.3 to 5 minutes)
2. Add almonds, stirring often.
3. When almonds become a dark brown color and start to smell roasted, add honey, stir to completely coat the almonds and ginger, and then remove from heat.
4. Let cool- the honey will harden a bit on the almonds, making a coating somewhat like a peanut brittle or caramel.
(Make extra and share with your friends! Nothing promotes friendship like splitting a tasty treat!)

That sounds amazing! I’m going to do it with coconut oil…
Thanks for the insight and recipe!
I have fond memories from when I was a kid of eating these honey almonds that my mother made. At the time I never knew the reason behind why she made them each month, but loved these sticky crunchy sweet treats! Now my kids enjoy the same treat.
Ps though the recipe we used didn’t include Ginger and was just honey, ghee, and almonds
