Yoga music is a diverse world. Some of it is wonderful for meditation, supporting and enhancing the practice. Some is energetic and active, great for movement or just casual listening. And some yoga music was made for devotion, filling the heart and connecting the listeners to something larger than themselves. It's not often that one album can touch on all of these things, but Sat Purkh Kaur Khalsa's newest album Queen Be: The Goddess Within does just that. Sat Purkh has created a beautiful album of tracks that fan the fires of devotion, aid personal meditations, and create an atmosphere filled with joy. She chose to mix instruments like guitars and bagpipes, strings and brass, to celebrate the diversity of the yoga community and it's varied practitioners. Queen Be shows us the type of practice Sat Purkh engages in, and invites us to share in that practice as well.
Sat Purkh's vocal talents really shine on the opening track,“Maha Goddess Mantra.” She has such a power and a resonance to her voice that at times it seems like she is in the room with you, rather than a voice coming out of the speakers. The gentle sounds of the woodwinds and harp provide some nice layers to the track, while at the same time keeping the focus on Sat Purkh's lovely voice.
Sat Purkh said she wanted to make an album suited to Kundalini yoga practice, so she included a trio of tracks on Queen Be which are perfect for 11 minute meditations. The first is “Sat Narayan Hari Narayan,” a mantra which connects listeners to the aspects of the divine which are both infinitely creative and also associated with water. The voices of the men and women join together beautifully, and make you feel like you're chanting along with a group.
“Ajai Alai - Fearlessness” uses instruments wisely. What better way to support such a powerful and syncopated mantra than with a mix of rhythmic and powerful instruments, including the wonderful oud and blasts from a didjeridoo and a trumpet. Sat Purkh chants the mantra at times, and includes musical interludes the same length as one recitation of the mantra. For those using this track for meditation, they could choose to continue reciting aloud, or chant along silently. The vocal harmonies also add wonderful depth to the track, making it fun just to sing along with.

The words to “Say Saraswati” were written by Yogi Bhajan, and call on different aspects of the feminine divine energy to bring happiness and fulfillment. This is a very joyous and fun mantra, and Sat Purkh wonderfully expresses that energy. Using the stringed kora and the calabash gourd, the track has an African feel that uplifts the mantra further. “Say Saraswati” is an extended meditation on the power that joy can bring us.
The closing track “Adi Shakti – Jai Ma!” is a celebration of the divine feminine as experienced in different forms and traditions. Buddhist Tara, Christian Mary, Hindu Ma, and the Adi Shakti come together to remind the world that the power of the feminine is present and available to all.
On Queen Be Sat Purkh Kaur Khalsa has done a wonderful job of celebrating the feminine and, at the same time, creating a fun and useful album for yoga practice. Listening to Queen Be, women everywhere will find a reminder of their innate grace and strength, and men can connect with their softer, feminine energy. And with a cast of instruments spanning the globe, everyone is sure to find something that connects with their heart.
