This past summer the yoga music scene received a fantastic new gift. Jai-Jagdeesh, one of the rising stars of the yoga music genre, released her first album, I Am Thine. Raised in a yogic family, and attending school in Amritsar, India, Jai-Jagdeesh has been surrounded by mantra and sacred music for much of her life. She brings this lifetime of practice to the album, exquisitely presenting a mix of mantras and shabads from the Kundalini yoga, Sikh, and Sanskrit traditions. She has performed at Summer Solstice and Sat Nam Fest, and will be in Joshua Tree for Sat Nam Fest West in April 2012. If you haven't heard her music yet, you would be doing yourself a huge favor to check out I Am Thine.
When I first heard Jai-Jagdeesh's voice, I literally forgot the words to the Aad Guray Nameh mantra. All I could think of was how amazing her voice is, and I felt like I was chanting the words for the first time. I Am Thine is like that the whole way through, each track feeling like an amazing new treasure. She has an incredibly pure tone, and the emotion her voice carries is palpable. If you love the sweet devotion of Mirabai Ceiba or Snatam Kaur, you'll love her voice. If you love the grounded earthiness of Nirinjan Kaur and Gurunam Singh, you'll love her voice. If you like the pop vibe of Tina Malia and Sirgun Kaur, you'll love her voice.
The tracks on I Am Thine are also blessed with fantastic arrangements. “Aap Sahaaee Hoa” is an introspective and emotional piece that works so wonderfully with the meaning of the lyrics. The piano and cello merge with Jai-Jagdeesh's voice, and together bring to life the feeling of surrender that the shabad speaks of. “Ong Namo Guru Dayvaa” goes in a different direction, energetically calling on Divine Wisdom. In “Mayray Govinda” we experience the tenderness of this shabad, composed by Guru Ram Das. Jai-Jagdeesh's producer Krishan and Hans Christian both contribute their musical talents to the album, lending their voices and instruments to each track.
The title track “I Am Thine” is immensely powerful. The mantra “I am Thine in Mine, Myself, Wahe Guru” is taught to bring clarity to your consciousness and remove fogginess from the mind. Combined with the mantra “Wahe Guru Wahe Jio,” and sung in Jai-Jagdeesh's beautiful voice, you'll be left vibrating with sheer bliss.
I Am Thine is an unbelievably wonderful album from an unbelievably talented artist. Jai-Jagdeesh has an incredible sense of musicality, and presents each mantra with a great sense of its meaning and purpose. She shows us that we have so much to look forward to in the yoga music genre, and is sure to have a lasting place in it. Jai-Jagdeesh, if you are reading this, please don't wait too long to make your second album. The world needs it!
