It's no secret that I love the music of Gurunam Singh. So when Gurunam released a wonderful new album called Honoring the Divine Feminine, I was thrilled. On Honoring the Divine Feminine, Gurunam gives the world a profoundly beautiful tool, the Bhand Jamee-ai shabad, to use in our personal meditation practice. The album offers a recitation track, with 11 recitations of the shabad, and a 32 minute musical track that can be used for extended meditation. Produced by Hans Christian, and featuring fantastic vocals and instruments, Gurunam Singh brings us a lovely and powerful way to connect with the energy of Divine Feminine.
The Bhand Jamee-ai shabad is a powerful shabad for honoring and connecting with the Divine Feminine. Yogi Bhajan taught that when men recite the shabad, it will help them to heal anger issues they may have towards women, and also to release mother issues. Men can recite Bhand Jamee-ai for the special women in their lives, to uplift and honor them. For women, it connects you to your inherent grace and dignity, and is a powerfully uplifting practice.
Instrumentally, Honoring the Divine Feminine is beautiful. Producer Hans Christian did a fantastic job with the instrumentation of this album. For the musical version it seems like Gurunam was joined by an entire orchestra of musicians, and each has a chance to shine throughout the 32 minutes. There is a wonderful violin, which has a sort of folksy, almost Appalachian feel to it. A cello comes in and brings a more classical, meditative vibe to the recitation. About a third of the way through, you'll hear Gurunam briefly break it down with a great percussion track. Keyboard, guitar, and esraj just to name a few – Honoring the Divine Feminine really does have it all.
Vocally, Gurunam is on fire. For the recitation track, his voice is clear and easy to follow. If you're new to this shabad, the pacing of the recitation is comfortable and easy to learn. The instruments help to keep the pace and energy, but don't overpower the vocal track so it's always possible to clearly hear Gurunam's words. On the musical track, Gurunam is joined by Michelle Hurtado. She has joined her lovely voice to many of the artists at Sat Nam Fest, and is a wonderful addition to Honoring the Divine Feminine. Together, Michelle and Gurunam's combined energy really brings this shabad to life. Even after the track ends, it stays in the mind and uplifts your energy.
Gurunam Singh put so much time and energy into the study and practice of this shabad, and it really shows. In the current Aquarian Age, Honoring the Divine Feminine is an essential tool for anyone's meditation practice. Let it lift you up and connect you to the Divine Feminine, and to the sacredness of femininity in your life and/or the lives of the women around you.
