Yogi Bhajan said “If you can't see God in all then you can't see God at all.” Ashana sees God in spiritual traditions from around the world, and incorporates prayers and mantras from them into her albums. The Infinite Heart is no exception, with Kundalini Yoga mantras standing beside Christian prayers and Buddhist mantras. Working again with producer Thomas Barquee, Ashana shares these international prayers which are enhanced by the sound of her signature crystal singing bowls. The Infinite Heart is yet another wonderful album of yoga music for meditation.
The Infinite Heart opens with two English track. “Everything I Am” brings together keyboards, singing bowls, strings, and guitar to create a very sweet song of love. On “One Sacred Earth” it is sometimes difficult to tell where Ashana's voice stops and her singing bowls begin. Her voice has that much resonance, and the way it blends with the crystal bowls in the opening of the track is captivating.
“To Be Loved (Prayer of St. Francis)” is a powerful track. The words of this prayer can open our hearts to the world, and help us practice selflessness and compassion. It is no small feat to become a bodhisattva-saint, and requires a balance of gentle love and boundless courage. This track dances between those two qualities, with a fantastic string section to set the mood. “To Be Loved” goes from gentle to strong, soothing to intense in a split second, lifting your energy and building your resolve before flowing back into the gentle sounds of cellos and violins. Ashana's voice is clear and powerful, and her singing bowls make for amazing percussion.
The bansuri flute on “Om Tare” sets a wonderful and mysterious mood. This track shifts between fast and slow chanting of the Tara mantra, accented by the crystal bowls and a great keyboard line. The Latin words to “Gloriosa” were written by Hildegard of Bingen in the 12th century, and the accompanying choir lends a particularly reverent feel to the track. “Tu Eres” is a beautiful song of devotion in Spanish, and the many layers of instruments and vocals give it amazing depth.
“Ra Ma Da Sa” is another particularly powerful track on The Infinite Heart. The beginning of the track layers different singing bowls together, and the vibrations seem to go on forever, intertwining themselves with Ashana's voice and the air itself. Imagine the shimmering quality of a desert mirage, or the ripples in the air caused by heat – that's the vibratory quality of Ashana's voice, and it's quite lovely! The instrumental ensemble includes gorgeous esraj and sarod playing, which seem to sneak in and out of the background and further enhances the ethereal quality of the track.
The album closes with “Aham Prema.” One could imagine the English lyrics being a message from parent to child, lover to beloved, and Divine to us. The message throughout the album is one of love and devotion, and it culminates in the Sanskrit mantra “Aham Prema,” which means “I am Divine Love.” We are all Love, if only we can remember it and live it.
Ashana's music is deep and meditative. The Infinite Heart perfectly captures the sound of the crystal singing bowls, which at times seem to be in the room with you. As always, Ashana's voice is light and angelic, and the ensemble of instrumentals creates a rich listening experience.
