I have dreams of being able to walk and bike everywhere I need to go. Unfortunately my suburban lifestyle finds me in the car for some amount of time daily. Instead of feeling sad about it, I turn to yoga music to lighten my travels. Whether it's a short trip to my favorite farmer's market, or a longer trek to visit my family out of state, yoga music is a great way to make an ordinary task like driving into something more enjoyable. Choosing yoga music to listen to in the car, especially on a longer trip, can take a little finesse. If you choose something too simple or hypnotic, you may find yourself drifting off or becoming bored. If you choose something too energetic, you can loose the peaceful aspects of chanting. Here are a few of my favorite yoga music albums for driving.
Harnam Singh – Love Infinite Divine – This is a great album for those times you find yourself stuck in a traffic jam or at a railroad crossing. Harnam's voice is so soothing, and the songs so uplifting they'll transport you to a happier place. But don't think you have to save this album for the stressful driving experiences. Love Infinite Divine will brighten any car trip you take, so pop it in the player and enjoy!
Snatam Kaur – Live in Concert – Snatam Kaur has a voice like no other. And the beautiful thing about Live in Concert is the depth of emotion and devotion you hear in her voice. As an added bonus, you can also enjoy the voices and music of GuruGanesha Singh, Ram Dass Khalsa and Manish Vyas. With several substantial tracks, you can put this album on and let the stress of your commute melt away.
Gaura Vani and As Kindred Spirits – Ten Million Moons – This is a fantastic album for driving. It mixes some incredibly upbeat and energetic tracks with soothing and meditative ones, keeping your energy well balanced during longer trips. One minor drawback is some of the tracks are lyrically complex, drawing from Bengali, Hindi, and Sanskrit writings. If you prefer to sing along with every word, this may not be the album for you. But if you love amazing energy and creative music, be sure to add Ten Million Moons to your collection!
MC Yogi – Elephant Power – Hip hop may not be everyone's favorite genre, but hip hop about Ganesh and Gandhi definitely have a certain kind of appeal. The tracks on Elephant Power have great energy, and are just plain fun to listen to. You may also learn a bit about the symbolism and mythology of figures like Shiva and Krishna. If you want to dip your toes into the MC Yogi water, you could also check out Elephant Powered Remixes, which has instrumental versions of all of the songs on Elephant Power.
Sada Sat Kaur – Mantra Masala – This is a really fun album. Sada Sat Kaur gives these mantras great energy, and they're easy to chant along with. Mantra Masala makes rainy days feel sunny, and sunny days more fun. I don't have a convertible, but rolling down the windows and singing along with Sada Sat Kaur is a fun way to spend a drive.
Whatever you choose to listen to while you drive, sing loud and enjoy yourself!
Harnam Singh, Snatam Kaur, and Sada Sat Kaur will all be performing at Spirit Fest, September 16-18 in Pennsylvania! Find out more at www.spirit-fest.com!
