Was Dumbledore a Kundalini Yogi?

Screen Shot 2014-05-20 at 2.55.31 PMWhen I first made the trip out to New Mexico to attend 3HO’s Summer Solstice I was struck by the otherworldliness of it all. I truly felt as if I was home and had a real sense of belonging. I had not experienced this connection anywhere else, and I knew that that I had truly stepped into a magical community. This was right around the time that JK Rowling’s Harry Potter Books were becoming a global phenomenon, and I felt like someone had pulled me aside and told me I was a wizard.  I now realize another parallel: Dumbledore was a Kundalini Yogi.

Here are five reasons why Dumbledore was a Kundalini Yogi:

1. Dumbledore is a beloved good wizard with a long white beard flowing hair. This brings to mind many of the respected elders in 3HO such as Guru Singh or Guru Dev. Both are master yogis with long flowing beards that have a powerful aura and energy about them. According to Kundalini yoga, the hair represents power and helps strengthen the human electromagnetic field.

2. As headmaster of the Hogwarts School of Magic, Dumbledore exemplifies the role of archetypal teacher, which parallels Yogi Bhajan, whose goal was to create teachers rather than followers.

3. Dumbledore is always shown with his head covered, which is also part of the Kundalini yoga tradition.  The head is covered with a turban, which expresses the regal aspect of the individual, by acting as a crown.

4. Dumbledore is seen pulling strands of thoughts and memories from his mind and putting them into a magical urn called a penseive. A Kundalini practitioner will use meditation, breath and chanting to achieve a similar clearing of the subconscious mind and any thoughts or fears that might be destructive.

5. Finally, Dumbledore embodied one of the noblest teachings of Kundalini Yoga. He believes in the darkest of places there is always light. This light is even  in the story’s villain Lord Voldemort, whom we get to see as a scared and confused young man who moves away from the light. The teaching that Yogi Bhajan left us with is that “If you can’t see God in all then you can’t see God at all.” The mantra Ek Ong Kar embodies this teaching connecting one with the infinite through the powerful vibration of this chant.
