The first time I ever chanted was at a yoga studio in Connecticut with Sean Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band. I had never experienced anything so joyful and innocent in my adult life. I remember setting an intention in that moment that one day I would have access to that kind of “entertainment” at any moment. Only about a year later I found myself working for a kirtan festival (Bhakti Fest) and living around the corner from a yoga studio with kirtan 3 nights a week! So I checked that intention off my list!
It’s no wonder though, because when we chant we are raised above the patterns of our mind and its limitations. We are lifted up into the vibration of the sacred sound current. With committed practice, we begin to notice that we have more and more space for Presence and Peace inside us. Within that vacuum, our intentions find a home for manifestation.
I went to see Dave Stringer this weekend at Urban Yoga in Palm Springs. I was curious what other people experience when they chant. Among the answers to “How does chanting make you feel?” were: “bliss, peaceful, open, at one with everything, meditative, tingly, elated...”
How does chanting make YOU feel?
