Namaste Toronto kirtan lovers! I hope you’re free February 19, because there is an amazing event happening in your neck of the woods. The Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, ON is hosting Ashtaprahar 2011, the first ever 24 hour kirtan event in Toronto.
Starting at 10am Saturday the 19th, a host of international kirtaniyas will be leading 24 hours of the maha-mantra, also known as the Hare Krishna mantra. Inspired by Lord Chaitanya, and hoping to bring together the different kirtan-loving communities of Toronto, groups like the Mayapuris and the Kirtaniyas, and solo kirtan leaders like Bada Haridas will sing God’s name with an expected 5000 guests. After the 24 hours are up, there will be more singing and celebration in the form of a Padayatra Maha-Harinaam and Bhajan Sandhya.
But wait, there’s more! In addition to the fantastic lineup of kirtaniyas there will be fresh prasadam served throughout the weekend. The website doesn’t give specific information about the food, but I’m betting vegetarian and delicious!
How much would you be willing to pay for admission to such a fantastic festival? $10? $20? How about FREE! Organizers believe that the celebration and singing of God’s name should be open to one and all, and admission and prasad are free to all.
Toronto has a very enthusiastic kirtan community, and I’m sure this event will be a phenomenal way to make new friends while celebrating the divine with old ones.
