“Don’t Cry For Me, Danish Fontina!”
hyp·o·crite; noun; defined as:
1. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.
2. a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, esp. one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.
Whenever I have a client or student with a health issue, I always refer them to books advocating a vegan diet. I chide them regularly to eliminate toxin and hormone laden dairy products, which I compare to drinking hemlock. I lecture them on the hormones found in America’s dairy products, the free radicals in their Skinny Lattes mutating their cells. But I have a secret: a creamy, fatty, delicious secret … I love dairy and consume it regularly with glee. Cheese and chocolate, in fact, are one of my major food groups. Until January 1, 2011. The hypocrisy stops here!
My lovable student and friend, soon to be co-vegan Rebecca Weidemeyer called me the other day to announce that she had read the vegan book I had recommended and that she was going vegan for the month of January. I wasn’t sure if she just assumed I was vegan, since I basically had flat told her to go vegan, and suddenly the guilt sliced me like a knife. “Me too!” I found myself saying. And when Ramdesh asked me to blog about The Vegan Experiment for Spirit Voyage, I saw it as a golden opportunity to keep myself on track.
Why Vegan?
The actress and activist Alicia Silverstone (who is opposite of Clueless) has penned a terrific book called “The Kind Diet” that provides intelligent information about why veganism really trumps regular vegetarianism.
Doreen Virtue ~ a well respected clairvoyant, says that dairy products make your aura visibly cloudy, and interfere with spirit communication. In her food addiction studies, she also noticed that people suffering from depression are drawn to dairy in particular. So depression feeds on dairy. Yuck. Remember, everything has energetic properties. When seeking a boost of energy, go for a brightly colored fruit or vegetable that grows in the sun. Consider then the journey of a wedge of Brie … fetid milk plunged from an indignant cow, … thick, sludgy, smelly, pungent with bacteria .. that’s what’s going into your digestive system. A moment on the lips; days in the digestive tract clogging your detoxification system and triggering the immune system to inflame your tissues and create mucus. Is it worth it? Not with products like Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss on the market!
When we think about how little people actually care for themselves, it’s really very disturbing actually. Let's make 2011 a journey of optimal health, self love, and love for animals and Mother Earth. Remember, your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual states are all interconnected reflections of each other; so when your physical body is clogged, cloudy, sluggish, inflamed and at war with itself, so too become your emotions, relationships and relationship with Spirit. What I anticipate to gain most from veganism is clarity and cleanness, not only in my body but in relationships and life, because your exterior is a reflection of the interior.
So because you’re eating the pain and anxiety of animal, supporting global warming, evil industrial farming, creating mucus and inflammation in the body, dousing yourself in strange animal growth hormones …. for one month lets Just Say No! to dairy.
Please join us in this uplifting experiment toward clarity, cleaner organs and kindness toward animals and the planet. We’re here to support and bond with you over it. Hey, it’s not like we’re asking you to give up coffee people! See you in the vegetable aisle!

Ok, Karen. Challenge accept. I am looking forward to this. Its going
To be an enlightening experience.
I am delighted!
The holidays served as the excuse I wasn’t gonna use to indulge in chocolate and veggie lasagna, mmmm…
So I’ve already begun–to January and beyond!
**Check out “The Raw Food Detox Diet” or “Detox 4 Women” by Natalia Rose for great recipes– not completely vegan, but super healthy and delicious and good nutrition information. Just a few recipes have goat cheese and fish which u can just pass on…
Great article Karen. Good luck!
You go girl!!!!
Vegan is the best way to eat.
Also, I strongly advice you try to have mostly only raw food in summer.
My boyfriend and I did it and I lost a size without breaking a sweat!
And as being kind to our animal friends, please, let’s all make an effort and stop buying
beauty products where it is not specified they haven’t been tested on animals.
Happy vegan 2011 to all of us!
I am game! I have been wanting to do it, but wondering how to make all of the substitutions. Considering it is Jan 1, what a great way to start a new year!
Hey fellow veganites!
Here are some recipes for Chocolate pudding and Vegan yogurt
Also, portabella mushrooms make for a great burger substitute–in a lot of cases what makes the sandwich or burger is the sauces and toppings anyway–so just substitiute the mushroom for the meat and make sure to add lots of your favorite toppings–lettuce, tomato, onions, peppers, marinara sauce for an Italian hero, etc…
I haven’t tried this recipe yet myself, but know from experience that coconut is such a great substitute for a lot of dairy (ice cream!). I stole these from Natalia Rose’s website: http://www.detoxtheworld.com
Strawberry yogurt
1 cup Fresh young coconut
½ cup of either fresh or frozen
Strawberries or 1 Tbsp pure Strawberry
fruit spread
1 Tbsp Raw honey, agave, stevia or
maple syrup
In a blender, mix all the ingredients
and blend until smooth.
Chocolate Pudding
2 cups coconut meat (or 1/2 avocado)
6 dates
4 Tbsp pure cocoa powder
Blend all ingredients in a food
processor until smooth and dig in!
