If you’ve ever played music alone and then in a band, you may agree that there are pros and cons to both approaches. Playing with others means more sounds, more fun, more ways to be creative. It also forces you to be true to your word, because you are accountable to more people than just yourself. If you didn’t rehearse, or feel like taking a nap in the middle of a rehearsal session, your band members will most likely notice.
A lot of patience and good communication are necessary to make sure that everyone’s opinions are being taken into consideration when making musical decisions too.
Working with Sat Darshan Singh on our first album is becoming like a group sadhana. I don’t get to do everything my way, and neither does he. We are both learning when to be assertive and when to allow.
This is a good thing!
Yogi Bhajan said that group sadhana tunes us into Group Consciousness, which is what will eventually bring us into Universal Consiousness.
As if waking up at 3:00am were not enough to wipe you clean of your narcissism and neuroses, try doing sadhana with others! You will no doubt find that your sadhana mates do Japji differently, aren’t following your rhythm for Sat Kriya, and sing the mantras of the Aquarian Sadhana far too loud--or maybe they just fall asleep.
Yet, isn’t that life? What is a day other than a series of situations that test your ability to work well with others? We are constantly put into situations that
force us to overcome what we think should be, or how things should work according to our own neurotic thinking. When we can make intelligent compromises we can proclaim victory over the drama.
Even if playing music with others is potentially messier than playing solo, it teaches us so much more about what pushes our buttons than a quiet rehearsal with our own self. The product of joint effort is far greater than one person can accomplish alone. That is why I am so excited about the collaborative album that Sat Darshan and I are working on!
On Thursday, March 10th at 7:00pm, Sat Darshan Singh and I will be playing our first big live show for a yoga studio opening in Manhattan. We made this video collage of our rehearsal this Tuesday. The baby’s dad is Josh, the guitarist. He could not sit still during our version of “I am the Light of My Soul”, prooving once again how sweet and pure that mantra is.
