We all know there’s no shortage of negativity in today’s world, in our individual lives, across the country and on a global scale. Whether you’re harboring negative energy or experiencing the projections of others around you (or on the news), these feelings can seem impossible to shake, no matter how hard you try. And with the overwhelming amount of information thrown at us on a daily basis, it’s easy for the negativity to spiral out of control.
You start out with optimistic intentions, but then one thought leads to another, and before you know it, you fall down a slippery slope of frustration, resentment, bitterness, and the like. The results are exhausting. Some days are better than others, but when you wake up with what feels like the weight of all of your karma on your shoulders, the path to positivity can be hard to find.
Even if you’re in the spiritual practice of raising your awareness, processing your emotions, and releasing those that no longer serve you, there’s a significant difference between wanting to let go and being able to do so. We must learn to acknowledge and accept the light and darkness within each of us, and then strive to remove our negative reactions to our thoughts, in order to break free.
Thankfully, Yogi Bhajan shared with us the powerful mantra “Jai Te Gang” (written by Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru of the Sikh lineage) to cut through our karma and negativity with the strength of an invincible sword. He said it can bring any person courage, grit, and self-esteem, no matter what forces are at play. He also recommended chanting the mantra while lying down, then while sitting, and then while standing, to experience its power in different ways. Once you surround yourself with the words, he said they will follow you. “Whenever there will be any negativity within the orbit of your life, this shabd will start ringing in your ear.”
So, listen to this mantra and access your inner strength, as strong as steel. Call upon your courage to cut through negativity and create space to receive the light.

Jai Te Gang Mantra Translation:
The sword breaks through and cuts down the demons of the mind and body.
This beautiful and powerful weapon adorns the battlefield of life.
It is as an extension of the arm, unbreakable, terribly fast.
It’s awesome splendor overshadows even the sun.
It protects the peace and happiness of the saints and destroys any powerful negative energy.
It has erased the negativity and guilt that I carry. I seek its refuge.
Praise, praise be to the great doer of the world, savior of the creation, my great protector.
Praise be to the sword.
You can listen to three beautiful versions of Jai Te Gang, each with its own unique take on this empowering mantra. I recommend playing them regularly in your home to clear out negative energy and attract strength, courage, and inspiration.
