Look out Connecticut yogis, you may soon see a rise in yoga class prices around the state.
Gov. Dannel Malloy’s new budget plan proposes the largest tax increase in Connecticut history, and yoga studios are coming under fire. As part of the proposal, yoga studios would lose their current sales tax exemption. And with the proposal also seeking to increase the state sales tax to 6.25%, Connecticut yoga studios will likely have no choice but to raise prices.
In 2010, many states looking to increase revenue in a difficult economy proposed taxation of yoga studios. In Washington, D.C. yogis started an email writing campaign to city council members to protest the proposed tax increase. They were initially successful, but in December the proposal was brought up again. In 2009 Missouri began collecting taxes from yoga studios, leading to complaints that yoga, a spiritual pursuit, should remain tax exempt. New York yogis formed the Yoga Association of New York to stop pushes by the state to step in and regulate teacher trainings in New York state studios.
As states across America continue to struggle with budget gaps and a troubled economy, proposals to tax yoga studios will most certainly continue. And for yoga students who rely on yoga to be a haven of peace in what may otherwise be a difficult time, an increase in prices could cut people off from an important lifeline. So for those of you who live in Connecticut, call your representatives. Write the Governor and let him know why yoga studios should maintain their tax exempt status. Help keep yoga affordable for everyone who loves and needs it!
