The sage is wise and venerable. Their words have gravity and import. Their wisdom is a source of comfort and support to their communities, and it is to the sage that people turn in times of crisis for wise counsel.
According to Yogi Bhajan, the 8th pauri of Japji recited 11 times a day gives one "the power to be a perfect sage." Most people think of the wise as speaking and teaching and sharing their wisdom. Sages do this, of course, but to become a sage one doesn't talk, one listens.
"Suniai" means listening, truly listening, going deep within your heart to listen to the vibration of the Universe. The first line "Suniai sidh pir sur nath" means to me that one becomes a wise spiritual leader by listening deeply to the sacred sound current.
The sounds of this pauri are so hypnotic and lovely. The word Suniai itself is like a lullaby you sing to your mind to help it quiet down so that you hear the vibration of All-That-Is humming sweetly inside of you to the beat of your heart. With that as the soundtrack of your mind, wisdom comes.
