Yogi Bhajan said that when you recited the 20th Pauri of Japji 11 times each day, it became a mantra for navigating danger. He said, "When the monsters are nipping at your heels, the twentieth pauri wipes away all your sins."
What does that mean? Well if we look at the 20th pauri, we find something very telling. "Punni paapi aakhan naah. Kar kar karnaa likh lai jaah." Traditionally, it's translated as "Often repeated actions are engraved on the heart and will be taken in God's court." To me, this has a very important meaning. Putting aside any concept of sin, this is saying that repeated actions are engraved on the heart...that is, each action has a vibrational imprint that our sensitive heart center stores. Repeated actions are most powerful. If we have a negative outburst one day, it's not the end of the world. But if we response with anger each day or consistently, this leaves a powerful imprint in our heart. Conversely, if we meditate once there won't be much lasting impact, but solid and consistent sadhana can change our lives. The second part of this statement deals with God's court, which is another word for Universe. To me, this means that our repeated actions (or words or thoughts or visualizations) are imprinted on our heart and that they are then felt by the Universe and responded to.
It's a kind of Law of Attraction talk. What we give, we get. And when monsters are snapping at our heels, there is something within us vibrating, known or unknown, that is drawing them to us. If we existed as total saints, completely vibrating at our highest potential and one with the cosmic source, danger could not touch us. Most of us aren't there yet, and so are open to danger from time to time.
How do we shift our point of attraction to one of safety and strength? The answers are in the 20th pauri...just as we wash our hands with water when they are dirty or wash our clothes with soap when they get stained, we wash our mind with chanting. It's not the only way to make this happen, but it is a good and solid technology for eliminating the vibration of negativity in your heart.
Don't take my word for it. Try it. Chant "Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru Wahejio" for 11 minutes and see if you can still be angry. Chant "Guru Guru Waheguru Guru Ram Das Guru" for another 11 and see if you don't feel supported. If you do, then you will know that the technology of the Naam works for you.
If you feel threatened by either a specific person or by negative energies, let the 20th Pauri cleanse you. Watch the monsters run away from you for a change.
The 20th Pauri
Bhariai hath pair tan deh. Paani dhotai utras kheh.
Mut paliti karpar hoe. De saabun laiai oh dhoe.
Bhariai mat paapaa kai sang. Oh dhopai naavai kai rang.
Punni paapi aakhan naah. Kar kar karnaa likh lai jaah.
Ape bij aape hi khah. Naanak hukmi aavah jaah.
