In 2004-2005, we launched a series of FREE concerts and workshops with the generous sponsorship of Golden Temple, Yogi Tea & Peace Cereal under the title of Celebrate Peace. Despite excellent efforts, the tour was poorly attended. Huge percentages of the people who registered for the events would never show up. It was heart breaking to see registrations at 500 for a show only to arrive for 150 people in an empty hall. I remember one show in Philly where I sat outside because I was so depressed. The following year we switched to a pay for tickets model and all concerts were much higher attended.
I took that to heart and found that people don't value what they have not invested in.
That being said, sometimes you have to give action to get action.
Giving away free downloads is the best way to drive traffic to your music and create community. If you check the shares on our free music pages, they are way higher than anything else we do. I would recommend coming up with something at least once a week to give away. Giving is the best way to create prosperity as it creates a karmic flow- like a boomerang. You give it out and it comes back.
In terms of downloads, you give it out and the traffic comes back. In the end, I've learned that it's important to provide the Spirit Voyage community with value, without devaluing our artists and their music. Balance is necessary. As an artist, you have to find your own balance. Give when it feels good, but don't undervalue your work.
