Episode Recap:
Ramdesh welcomes GuruGanesha Singh, extraordinary kirtan artist, founder of Spirit Voyage, and devoted student of Professor Parmamjeet Singh, master of classical Indian music, to this exciting show, taped just two days before the Professor’s “Yoga of Voice” December 10 & 11 weekend workshop at Guruganesha’s home in Herndon, Virginia. GuruGanesha explains how his vocal range has expanded since studying with the Professor and says that everyone can benefit from this wonderful study of ancient Indian voice exercises for vocal development, health, and meditation. “I don’t think you can get a whole lot more satisfaction in life than singing sacred words together with other beautiful souls,” says GuruGanesha.
Ramdesh and GuruGanesha are joined by Professor Paramjeet, who began his musical journey at the age of six (he received his Master of Philosophy degree in Indian Classical Vocal from Dehli University and became the youngest Professor ever to teach music at Punjabi University Patiala at age 24). The Professor explains the origins of music for meditative and spiritual purposes, rather than entertainment. You need not be a professional musician or kirtan artist to benefit from the practice: The voice, he says, is a miraculous tool we are all given to help us get in touch with God. Enjoy Professor Paramjeet’s beautiful selections, Naam Japo Mere Sajan Saina and Dhan Dhan Ram Das Gur. “When music and the Sikh philosophy come together [they create] a powerful source of spirituality,” he observes.
Listen to Aval Allah (from GuruGanesha’s recent album, Kundalini Surjhee), which was inspired by the Professor’s composition and westernized by GuruGanesha with electric guitar and bass while maintaining the sacred purity of the original work. Professor Paramjeet, who has never before heard his student’s new rendition of the raag, is delighted. Sense the love between master and disciple as these two amazing souls and musicians enjoy and share their music together just before their greatly anticipated weekend workshop and concert.
