We all know Ramdesh as an extraordinary Kundalini Yoga teacher, hostess of Spirit Voyage radio, administrator of Spirit Voyage’s blog, and a beautiful person, but this radio segment is a chance to get to know Ramdesh the author--a woman who shares some of her most intimate and sacred thoughts and experiences. On this show, she sits down with her co-author (and Spirit Voyage Music CEO) Karan Khalsa to discuss the publication of their new book, Yoga and Mantras for a Whole Heart. In the process, both women open their hearts to their listeners.
Karan explains how Yoga and Mantras for a Whole Heart came to fruition: “I have been at Spirit Voyage for a long time, putting out CDs by amazing artists and it’s been a pet project of mine to one day compile the Kundalini Yoga teachings with the music and offer a full package of the things people need in their lives.” Working with Ramdesh, Karen decided that the first book should be about making your heart whole, healing your heart, and being able to open your heart. The book includes six meditations and accompanying tracks by various artists. “All you need to do is sit down, put on the CD and start your meditation with this book and you’re all set,” Karan says. (The second book in the series, by Karan and GuruGanesha Singh, is called Yoga and Mantras for Prosperity.)
Karan, a KY lifer who was raised from birth in the practice, says she wanted to help others who have experienced a broken heart (and who hasn’t?). “One of the most treasured things in my life was to have something to reach out to that would really help me through painful times. The Kundalini Yoga meditations were really powerful for me so that seemed the right place to start,” Karan says. Included in the book/CD package (which is beautifully designed by Prana Projects) are “Mera Man Loche & Aad Such” by Sat Purkh, “Humee Hum Brahm Hum” by Guru Singh & Seal, “Aad Guray Nameh” as well as “Long Time Sun” by Snatam Kaur, “Sat Kartar” by Sat Kartar, and “Ra Ma Da Sa” by Mirabai Ceiba.)
Ramdesh, who was invited to write the ten principles for living with a whole heart, shares some golden nuggets from her personal journey with Kundalini Yoga, revealing that she was not always the happy person she is now: “I know people may think when someone is happy it’s because they have a happy life, but everyone has challenges and it’s really how you face those challenges and then go on about your daily life that makes the difference.” Ramdesh, who faced a life-threatening health crisis at the age of nine that left her without hearing (and temporarily without sight), is living proof that this is true.
What are the principles of living with a whole heart? Randesh shares a few of the principles here: The first is committing to a daily spiritual practice. “It renews your strength, restores your aura, allows you to make it through when things are rough, and to not let yourself down.” But it has to be every day.
Next, “Accept what is.” Even though life may deal some difficult challenges, to accept that the process of good is unfolding in your life is key. “This idea of accepting is enormously powerful.”
Selfless service. Ramdesh shares an uplifting story of a time when she was very lonely and homesick while living on an ashram in India. She went out to the Ganges and began helping an old man who was struggling with heavy water jugs. “Go find someone with problems worse than yours and help them,” Ramdesh advises. As Yogi Bhajan said, “the other person is you.”
You’ll hear many more profoundly moving stories on this special segment with Ramdesh. She’ll also guide you through the Ad Guray Nameh meditation for projection and protection of the heart and the Sat Kartar meditation to open the heart. Let your heart be filled with light and love as you join Ramdesh and Karan Khalsa in this special hour celebrating their beautiful book, Yoga & Mantras for a Whole Heart.
