Editor’s Note: This is the second of a 2 part interview with Gurujas of White Sun. You can read part 1, where she opens up about White Sun’s creative process & the making of White Sun II here.
Spirit Voyage: Can you tell us a little bit about who you are – what your passions are?
Gurujas: My life is very simple, because I only care about one thing: as long as I am serving the mission, I don’t mind what else happens. I try to do better today than I did yesterday, and I’ll try to do better tomorrow than I did today. Yogi Bhajan said something very interesting, “I wake up in the morning, I do everything as accurately as I can, and I go to sleep at night. I don’t do anything else.”
Spirit Voyage: What are three things you hope to accomplish in your lifetime?
Gurujas: My hope is that the White Sun songs can take people into that vast magical kingdom within, which has its own unique language of beauty, grace, dignity, and wonder. And if I can lead someone in that direction, I feel I will have done my part to brighten the world with the White Sun light.
Spirit Voyage: What do you love most about your Kundalini Yoga practice?
Gurujas: Harijiwan explains the practice of Kundalini Yoga in the following way, and I have never heard a more perfect description: “Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan is a scientific technology for happiness. It extends the brain to imagine Infinity in its totality; then it is a gradual process to work for that experience. Every movement is scientifically originated, structured, organized and projected. This is a discipline in which there is nothing but continual enrichment, fulfillment and success. When practicing Kundalini Yoga, your inner power is awakened to unite with the Universal life force, empowering you with awareness beyond the ordinary. This awakened state gives you the capacity to expand your perspective and experience each day with increasing inspiration, wisdom and joy.”
Gurujas: Each song begins with a melody, which will play in my head during the day, or in my dreams at night. The melodies are very specific in how they want to be sung. Variations don’t work. Usually the mantra arrives after the melody comes through, and only one mantra will work for a particular tune and rhythm. Once I bring the song into the studio, Adam and Harijiwan work their magic. Adam begins composing, and Harijiwan puts an energetic stamp on each song. Sometimes people comment that when listening to White Sun, they can sing along without ever having heard the song before.
Spirit Voyage: What do you hope your listeners experience or learn as they listen to your album?
Gurujas: We are yogis, and these are our songs. Many musicians will tell you that the songs came to them. That they found the song. Or the song found them. We feel the same way. We feel these mantras, these ancient sounds, want to be set in new musical settings. The mantras want to dance on the world stage. The mantras want to sing their sounds throughout this global computer landscape we have created. The mantras want to participate in the evolution of humanity. These are the songs that bring balance and harmony to the person who is struggling with the onslaught of computerized information. These are the songs that can heal, can protect, exalt and expand you. These mantras changed me, gave me incredible experiences of wonder and joy. I feel very privileged to help sing them into creation..
