Most of us have had some experience of, or exposure to, essential oils. Oils are powerful healers for our digestive, circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems. Essential oils are the immune system of plants and trees, and they act upon our human system in powerful, healing ways. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and children should not use essential oils without first consulting a licensed healthcare practitioner. When combining aromatherapy and yoga what everyday essential oils can support our daily practice?
There is a group of oils that are known as ‘sacred oils.’ They are rare and precious and have been used for thousands of years in rituals. We can use these oils to enhance our daily practice. To center and ground us; to open the heart, third eye and crown chakras. Wahe Guru!
Frankincense, Sandalwood and Myrrh are the three base spiritual oils:
Frankincense oil grounds the breath and expands the upper chakras. It is great for use in following the breath in meditation. It is often used as a spiritual tool for ritual and prayer or meditation. An intoxicating fragrance, with many healing powers!
Sandalwood oil is one of the best essential oils to apply directly to the body for immediate effect. Sandalwood essential oil is calming, cooling and uplifting. Apply sandalwood oil to your 3rd eye point and temples to promote stillness of mind during meditation, relaxation on a stressful day or to refresh the brain when there is more work to be done. It is safe to apply directly to the skin.
Myrrh essential oil’s aroma is uplifting and assists in spiritual opening. Myrrh's effect on the central nervous system is a gentle and calming one, able to instill a deep tranquility of the mind. Myrrh strengthens the connection between our crown and base chakras. Myrrh is said to ease grief and heal emotional wounds, bringing about peace and calm.
I would add Rose Otto and Palo Santo essential oils to the list.
It is quite costly to buy organic, therapeutic grade, unadulterated rose oil, but there is no substitute! Avoid synthetics! A drop of rose oil applied to the heart, throat, or third eye centers, deepens meditation, calms and cools an over-active or irritable mind, and generates moods of love and compassion. Palo Santo oil is said to align with prana. An expansive, uplifting effect is associated with this essential oil. It is a valuable tool for meditation, enhancing creativity, and for tasks requiring sustained concentration, as well as shamanic practices.
If you want to make a blend try combining frankincense, myrrh, palo santo, sandalwood and lavender or rose (a total of 20-22 drops) with jojoba oil in a 15 ml amber or cobalt blue bottle. Try 8 drops each of frankincense and lavender and 2 each of the remaining oils.
Use essential oils as part of your meditative practice and feel the difference!
