Healing the Waters with Kundalini Meditations and Mantras
It is impossible not to be moved by the story of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It is a tragic story of human hubris, of a species drunk on its own technology and overconfidence. The repercussions are so stunning and dramatic that it is hard to encapsulate them into a tidy summary of damage. The ocean is hurting. The marine life is hurting. The people whose lives depend on the waters are hurting.
As yogis, what can we do? How can we help to heal the wounds of Mother Earth? We can put our yogic practice into action, and using prayers, mantra, and meditation from the tradition of Kundalini Yoga, we can establish a global crisis response team of an energetic sort. Let us rise up as healers and direct prayerful energy towards the Gulf of Mexico, its waters, and our brothers and sisters of the sea.
Music can inspire the human family to create a space of sacred intention within. Start out listening to Snatam Kaur’s Deep Blue Sea or Mirabai Ceiba’s Ocean to establish an energetic connection to the waters. Listening to either song, feel oneness with the waters of the world. Create an environment full of the water element. Put a bowl of water on your altar as a symbolic representation of the Gulf of Mexico and direct your healing prayers towards it. Cut out photos of the sea or the Gulf of Mexico and place them on your altar. Light a candle that honors the light in every creature, whether of land, air or sea, that is affected by this tragedy. Listen to Snatam and imagine sitting on the beach and gazing out upon the deep blue sea. Perhaps you can visualize yourself floating on the water, being held up by the ocean’s sweet embrace. If you live near a river, go there and sit, and let Mirabai soothe you with a gentle song about oceans and rivers. Feel the waters in your energy field and remind yourself that you are a body of water, too, and can stand in for the Gulf of Mexico in these healing practices.
These are suggestions for meditation, mantra, meditation with mantra, and shabads that you can use to help alleviate the Gulf Oil Spill. Choose one that resonates with you or try them all.
Meditation
The Blue Light Cleansing Meditation
Sit in easy pose with your hands in Gyan Mudra (thumbs and index fingers touching). Inhale through the nose in four parts, with each breath visualizing white light coming into the crown of your head or the navel center. Exhale very slowly and visualize yourself radiating a brilliant blue light from every pore of your body. Imagine that you are standing in for Mother Ocean and are helping her filter the oil out of the waters. Continue for 15 minutes. Then begin to inhale in five parts, continuing with the visualization of breathing in white light and radiating out blue, cleansing light with your exhale. Continue for another 15 minutes. (These times may be reduced if necessary.)
To end, inhale and imagine that the blue healing light that now fills your aura is the ocean and say a prayer of blessing to the waters in the Gulf of Mexico that they might share in the powerful energy you have created. Exhale and know that healing is occurring.
Mantras are powerful words that vibrate with a specific effect. Yogi Bhajan taught that when a mantra is spoken it couldn’t be erased; it becomes a part of the akashic record. When a mantra is spoken as a prayer, he said it was the most powerful force on earth. The following mantras can be used to pray for the healing of the Gulf of Mexico, each in their own unique ways.
Kal Akal Siri Kal Mahaa Akal Akal Moorat
This protective mantra is said to wrap around negativity and seal it closed. Visualize the pipeline under the Gulf and repeat this mantra, seeing it seal the rupture closed, stopping the oil leak.
This ancient mantra means that our soul is undying. Chant this mantra to the animals that have lost their lives as a result of this oil spill to help liberate their souls from the earth and relieve any trauma suffered. A free download from Snatam Kaur is available on Spirit Voyage.
Ardas Bhaee, Amar Das Guru, Amar Das Guru, Ardas Bhaee
Ram Das Guru, Ram Das Guru, Ram Das Guru, Sachee Sahee
This sweet mantra is a powerful prayer. This mantra helps relieve a difficult situation and invokes the prayer-answering energy of loving Gurus. Before chanting and after, say a prayer of healing for the Gulf, the animals, and the people affected by the spill.
Meditation with Mantra
This mantra invokes the energies of the sun, the moon, the earth and the Infinite to bring deep healing. It can be chanted to send healing to others, and so is a powerful tool to direct healing towards the Gulf. A free download from Snatam Kaur is available on Spirit Voyage.
Sit in easy pose and bend your arms up at the elbows. Flatten your hands as if preparing to receive something into them. Shut your eyes and focus them on the third eye. Chant with all your heart for 11 minutes. To end, inhale and visualize green healing light radiating from your heart to that which you want to heal. Exhale. Repeat the breathing with the healing green light for 3 minutes.
Shabad
The Narayan Shabad (full words and translation available on Spirit Voyage’s Mantrapedia)
The Narayan Shabad is a holy prayer written by the fifth Sikh Guru, Arjan. Narayan is a name for the Divine that specifically relates to the water element. Just as a plant needs water to blossom, chanting this prayer allows our souls to flourish in grace and beauty. Narayan is the quality of the divine that restores, allowing life to become fresh, lush and green again. It is also said to defend against death and restores what has been lost with renewed abundance and life. Chant the Narayan Shabad as a prayer to restore vitality and life to the Gulf of Mexico. Use it to defend the lives of the living creatures still there. Believe in its power to restore the waters to their natural state. If the Gurmukhi words are too challenging for you, sit in the sound current just listening to the shabad being sung. Use the power of your focused meditation on the sound current to bring the healing waters of Narayan to the waters in the Gulf.
