5 Happy Steps to a New Heart
Thinking about the New Year, I want to let go of so many things. Worries, anxieties, wounds. My heart needs to be free to step into 2011. Uninhibited, spirited, energized. My heart is my life, my love that I share with the world, my stove that warms the hearts of others.
These days I see so many people suffering from pain in their hearts. This pain comes from emotional suffering, such as lack of self-worth, self-appreciation, or excessive and possessive love and mental attachments. Kundalini Yoga can help!
Here are 5 top techniques to practice to heal heartache.
1. Heal with meditation
Sitting in Easy Pose, pucker your lips and inhaling deeply and exhaling through the mouth, start drawing the circles with your hands from the heart centre in opposite directions. The fingers are wide spread and palms face forward. Most amazing mantra that you can listen to is Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Se So Hung by Mirabai Ceiba. Allow your heart to inhale and exhale. Mentally vibrate mantra for 11 minutes.
2. Invite Love
Transform the vibes in your heart and around you with mantra ‘Sat Kartar’, well described by Maya Fiennes in her book “Yoga for Real Life.” When I tried it, I felt the Love (with a capital L) cascading down in to my life. It was so beautiful and magnificent. Close your eyes, focus on the point between your eyebrows. As you say ‘Sat’ press palms together at the heart center. As you say ‘Kar’ extend your arms out to the front, roll sound ‘r’. As you say ‘Tar’ extend arms fully out with palms facing out. Start with 3 minutes and slowly extend to 11. Allow body to settle for few deep breaths. It is very powerful, so set a clear intention before you start. Focus always helps.
3. Work it
Classical Hatha yoga asanas like Cobra, Locust, Bow and other back bends are great for your heart. They will rejuvenate and maintain the essential functions and connect you with inner peace.
4. Center your heart on Infinity
This is my heart’s favorite, too. Great to get prepared for the new year.
Sit in Easy Pose. Bring your hands onto your chest so that your thumbs are tucked under your armpits. The thumbs press against the ribs. Palms are against the chest as if hugging your heart. Elbows relaxed by your sides. Through puckered lips inhale deeply and whistle, mentally vibrate ‘So’. Completely exhale through nose and vibrate ‘Hung’. So Hung means “Infinity, I am Thou.” 11 minutes. Your Infinity is inside you. May the New Year be infinite in its blessings.
5. ‘Let Go, Let God’
If we see that every situation and outcome is given by God, then we are more likely to take it easier and don’t beat ourselves up increasing the number of self-inflicted wounds. Don’t try to analyze processes, just trust them. Go through your day, silently repeating this mantra. This is a wonderful technique I learned from the book “The 8 Human Talents’ by Gurmukh.
“I do not believe in miracles, I rely on them.” – Yogi Bhajan
P.S. May you have a healthy and understanding heart, open and balanced mind. May love forever surround you and your loved ones. Wahe Guru! Happy New Year!
