I am pretty sure in a past life, I used to climb trees, eat bananas, sticks, bugs and green leafy vegetables because in this life, I am pretty satisfied eating an abundance of bananas to satiate my hunger and need for nutrition.
Bananas are the new gluten free, raw, whole-food granola bar that nature has so graciously provided for us to fuel our bodies. Bananas contain three naturally occurring sugars combined with fiber that offer us an instant, sustained and noticeable energy boost after consumption.
Either Yogi Bhajan was a monkey in his past life like I was or he was very tuned into mother earth’s knowledge that fruits in their whole, natural state are great for detoxifying and re-energizing the body. Yogi Bhajan often recommended yogis do a banana and greens feast/fast during the new moon time to help propel the body and spirit forward into new growth and development.
What makes a banana the “new” go-to food?
First off, I want to fill you in on a little banana secret to help you discover the many combinations and ways to fully enjoy and satisfy yourself with bananas. You MUST MUST MUST eat them when they are fully ripe and freckly. That means it is necessary to buy your bananas and leave them on the counter for several days until they develop small, brown cute little freckles on their skin. It will definitely take some patience to wait for your fruits to ripen; however, it is well worth the wait when you bite into a perfectly sweet banana.
When bananas are eaten before the fully ripe stage, they are very difficult for our digestive tract to break down and utilize as nutrition for our bodies. Since our body is looking for energy, it breaks down all food sources we eat to form readily useable sugar as fuel for our cells. Bananas eaten in their fully ripe stage offer those ready available sugars for our body to use to climb all those trees and perform multiple repetitions of frog pose.
It is often suggested not to feed babies green bananas because they hinder the proper digestive flow that we require to stay healthy, happy and holy from the inside out. Why should or would that be any different for adults? All fruits, bananas or not are best and most enjoyable to the palate when eaten at a fully ripe, juicy and succulent stage.
Bananas are not only full of healthy sugars, carbohydrates and fibers they also contain potassium, iron, magnesium, manganese, copper and B vitamins, especially B6 to help facilitate healing and health to the body.
One average size banana contains 100 calories made up of 2% fat, 3 % protein and 7% carbohydrates for instant nutrition. Who ever knew that the yellow skinned fruit touted as the highly glycemic and calorically dense fruit had naturally occurring fats and protein? I know I was happily surprised to find out this new information.
Whole fruit sugars are not to be feared. They are much different then man made processed white sugars. In fact, we should eat as much fruit, preferably one type of fruit per meal that our body desires. With all the meditating and intuition building devices we have developed using the tools and techniques in Kundalini Yoga, we are sure to allow our bodies to intuitively tell us when enough is enough. Do trust the process of feeding yourself the way nature intended.
Here are two of my favorite refreshing banana smoothie recipes to help you start to detoxify, energize and renew your body. Since spring has sprung on the calendar, why not prepare your body for the blooming times ahead. Your body will thank you.
These recipes are vegan, gluten-free, dairy free and vegetarian friendly.
3-4 ripe bananas
3 frozen ripe bananas
4 cups of purified water
½ tsp of Ceylon Cinnamon (tastes like true cinnamon)
1 or 2 cardamon seeds
1 gorilla size handful of spinach
Directions: Blend all ingredients using a high-speed blender for best results and consistency. I would suggest piling your ripe bananas, followed by water, the frozen bananas, the spices then add greens on top before blending. Add more or less water and spices for your enjoyment. Use your intuition and let it guide you to create a version of this recipe that suits you. This drink contains approximately 700 calories. Drink it slowly and enjoy it’s effects.
*Note: Using frozen bananas is necessary to get the “mylky- like” and frothy consistency. Start saving your extra ripe bananas, peeling them and putting them in the freezer for when you need them.
Vanilla Banana Mylk
3-4 ripe bananas
3 frozen bananas
4 cups of purified water
½ tsp of vanilla bean powder
*Additions: Feel free to add ½ tsp of cinnamon and a couple of cardamon seeds for added enjoyment and flavor.
Directions: Blend as directed above.
