In Gurunam's Words:

What a blessing it is to be working at Spirit Voyage.  In so many ways we are changing and growing, as a company and as individuals. We have been creating a strong foundation for years and now we are expanding and touching more lives, people, and hearts than we ever have before.  This is really nice to be a part of.  I enjoy getting to know you all personally so that I can suggest the best music, yoga products and other resources to suite your particular needs.

The Journey Home - my new CD!!!

It is my blessing to offer you my first CD “The Journey Home”!  It took so many of us, and the hand of the Divine, to create and complete this project.  Hargobind initially suggested this project start because he really loved the way I played the sadhana chants. Karan has worked hard to see it come to fruition, and so has Ditta, who put together the artwork and liner notes among many other things. So I am thankful to Spirit Voyage for offering me a doorway to fulfilling dreams which lie outside, yet are very closely related to, my job selling spiritual music.

These mantra’s have healed and balanced me over the years.  I am humbled and blessed to have the chance to offer this music.

This CD will be available for purchase very soon.   (Feel free to listen to the sound clips below…)

Ong Namo-

Each day before starting my yoga practice I chant this mantra.  It is natural that it became part of this CD.  As it sets an intention to let an energy beyond myself, or deep inside myself as it were,  preside during my yoga practice, may it also invoke that divine energy for you, for listening to, or chanting with, this CD.  Or as you do your yoga practice

I can see someone driving a car cross country and listening to this while taking a long journey home. Thus the cover of the CD.  I feel that way about “Gobinday Mukunday”, too.  Driving in. Driving home.

Gobinday Mukunday,

I dreamt of a young indian boy on a beautiful estate.  He was practicing martial arts on a big, fresh green lawn.  He began doing side-kicks over and

over on his right side.  He repeatedly looked over his shoulder to get approval to let his leg down and stop kicking.

It was Guru Gobind Singh sitting on a beautiful couch in the middle of the lawn that he was looking to for that approval.  The Guru motioned the young boy to keep kicking.  After a while the young boy had looked several times to show his father he was getting very tired. The Guru finally nodded to him that it was okay to stop.  In a flash Guru Gobind Singh had opened his wide arms and the young boy had leapt into them.  In Guru Gobind Singh’s

Full embrace the boy was filled with peace and love.  His heart was opened and he was enlightened like a clear blue sky.  Though this mantra is for victory and fearlessness these virtues are reached through compassion and neutrality.  I hope this mantra rendition embodies the same love I felt in this dream and imparts the same determination to keep fighting and striving, kicking, until it is time to rest in the arms of love, until the karma is done. May it give you compassion and make you fearless.

Guru Gobind Singh is the 10th Guru of the Sikh’s, a great warrior, poet and Saint.  He died defending religious freedom for all, no matter what religion.  Though he fought fiercely that was only when all other means had failed.  His love was what defined him.  His love was who he was, and is.

Mul Mantra-

It has been my blessing to sing God’s praises in the early morning when the sun is rising and my seva. Helping to lead, and leading, the early morning chants has been a big part of my life the last 10 or so years. The mul mantra is one of the mantra’s Yogi Bhajan taught that when we gather together in groups to chant before the rising of the sun this is one of the mantras to chant.  For many years I have chanted it with many different communities of people in the dawn.  I am really happy this ended up on the CD.

Pavan Guru-

Pavan is the the deep breath of the divine.  A great healer and close friend of mine suggested I create a “pavan guru” that had lots

Of prana.  I was at a summer solstice event in new Mexico and I was to play in a rensabhie, an all night kirtan event, where every 5 or 10 minutes a new group of people sing praises to God. Over 600 people crowded under a shelter to sing God’s praises until they fall asleep.  This, after a week of rising up before the sun rises and three days straight of white tantric meditation. It’s easy to get almost delirious in the tiredness, and having gone beyond yourself, come to another place inside. I went to my tent to get my guitar around midnight.  When I got in the tent a tremendous downpour started and I could not leave.  I sat there in the dark, surrounded by cracks of lightening and loud thunder.  So I pulled out my guitar and put this pavan guru mantra to music.  After chanting it for a half hour the rain died down and I went back up to the shelter and played it in the rensabhie.  For me, it holds the prana of the electricity of the moment it came into my consciousness.

Ardas bhaee-

This mantra brings one into a state of prayer.  I have been singing this for the last few years at solstice events and in gurdwara’s and at kirtan events.  People often request it.  It is usually just me, my acoustic guitar and someone playing tabla’s, but on the CD there are layered rhythmns, cello and personal harmonies I can’t do when it’s just me!  I feel what Hans Christian, the producer, did with the instrumentation on this is just amazing.  The cello is him.  Wah!

Dukh Par har-

I worked on Yogi Bhajan’s ranch planting trees and doing general grounds work.  After a few years I stopped doing it as my full time job but was then personally instructed by Yogi Bhajan to dig ditches in his back yard and never to come into his presence again unless I was digging ditches!  So then, at least once a day before or after work for a long time, as a seva, and in obedience to his demands, I would dig ditches for the waterways by the road, transport dirt piles from one place to another, dig ditches for plumbing, pick up excess bird feathers, plant trees, whatever could be done to help beautify the estate.  He was allowing me to be so close to him by asking me to be on that property.  What a blessing from heaven!  But with all the early morning meditations, work and then the seva at the estates I found large amounts of anger and sadness coming up.  One night, during a class I was attending, he taught that if one were to chant “dukh par har sukh ghar la jae” ones anger and misery would be taken away.  I used to repeat this while digging ditches and working around His estate when I would get angry or sad. Sometimes he would say things just to make me angry. But he brought me to places of such deep love and clarity that I would be a fool if I didn’t recognize that he was either doing this to show me something about myself or to get the anger to come up, so it would release.  In other words, to teach me or to heal me. I will save those stories for another time.  That was quite a few years back.  I am grateful for every moment I had to see His face and I am grateful now that he is with me.

When I had only two days left to decide which mantras would go on this CD I sat down at my harmonium and put this to music, very close to the monotone way it was in the class he taught it.  I feel it really engages the navel and is simple and good for getting out the aggressiveness.  Yet it is a chant of devotion which speaks of how one can give his/her personal pains to God and take home happiness and peace.  Wynne Paris put the killer guitar in here, Girish put the tabla’s and Hans Christian added extra rhythmns and had me add in new harmonies.  This one feels almost shamanic to me at times, and that was part of the original intention.

Thou Art The Lover-

Sometimes I feel distant from God, though he/she is so close to me.  Then I have to dig down in myself to find what it was I started this spiritual path for and what the real purpose of my vows were.  This song is a declaration of sorts, but more so an expression of commitment and love for God.  I write lots of poetry and lots of songs.  This just happened to be one I had written a month or so before beginning work on the CD.  I decided that since it was my most recent song it would come through more genuine for the CD than the others.

Ragani has not just the sweet feminine touch in her kirtan but also adds the strength of the shakti power to it. The mantra’s start slow and gain speed as they whirl you into a kirtanfest! (Okay, I just made that word up).

Crimson Vol 6 & 7

This Ardas Bhaee is the most soothing of mantra’s- It is to take you into a state of prayer. For the hopeless it is to give hope, and for the homeless, a home. If you can’t find the home in your own heart listen to this and come back to that place. I sleep to this Cd.
